Arrow To All With Psychology

I will very much appreciate it if Dr.G.AsgharMemon could kindly send me the psychology notes. My e-mail address is: bulbul.bobo@hotmail.com

Also I would like everyones' suggestions on opting for this subject in my scenario. I appeared in CSS 2008 and cleared the written part of it. Unfortunately my merit number was extremely low and I had no choice but to reappear in 2009 with same subjects without much preparation as I was loosing my chance in any case due to my age. The cause of my low score in 2008 was Political Science which I had picked on suggestion of a friend and I thought I had done pretty well in it for my part.

I did my masters in Pol Science while studying for CSS but had no prior background in Pol Science just as I have never previously studied Psychology. I have gone through the past papers of Psychology and it seems one can do well in this subject if one studies it.

2010 will be my final attempt for CSS and I have no hope of passing in 2009. I want to choose my subjects carefully and don't want to take any risks.

Please help - all opinions willl be much appreciated!

Default opting psychology

Hi SMalik I am working as a Lecturer in the discipline of psychology in one of the public sector universities of punjab. I appeared in CSS 2009 and attempted psychology.
As you have mentioned that
1. you do not have any background in psychology
2. your masters is in political science
3. CSS 2010 is your last attempt
keeping in view your above mentioned concerns, it is safe for you not to go for psychology as
1. it is a technical subject
2. it needs background knowledge
3.its syllabus is lenghthy
it might become impossible for you to grab high marks in psychology, no doubt, you can get good marks by good preparation but to be on safe side as its your last attempt so do not opt psychology rather go for some other relatively scoring subject.
I hope you would be satisfied.
Ahmad Bilal

Dear smalik, I think psychology is quite scoring subject. No, previous background is required. I have never studied psychology except for taking css examinations. i found this subject very intresting!
If you want to opt for this subject, then keep following few things in mind:

1. To get a technical hand on language of psychology, Memorize Glossary of words in any good book of psychology.

2. READ only One book, which covers maximum topics!! For this suggestions by css qualifier on books is sufficient. her views i m quoting :
Quote:
amubark:Psychology:
I have done my masters in Applied Psychology from Punjab University Lahore. The books I consulted for CSS prep were:
•Gerrig, J. Richard & Zimbardo, G.Phillip. (2005). Psychology and Life. (17th Ed.). Dehli: Pearson Education in South Asia
•Morgan, C.T., King, R.A., Schopler,J. & Weisz, J.R. (1986). Introduction to Psychology. (7th Ed.). New York: Mc Graw Hill Book Company

Morgan’s book is an old book, but it’s great for beginners and you find lot of topics both for paper one and two in it. As for Gerrig and Zimbardo, it’s ‘the book’. It covers almost 80% of paper one and two. Well 80% of what I prepared, because I didn’t prepare 2 chapters each for paper I and II. As for Feldman, it’s a very good book, but I always preferred Morgan over Feldman during my graduation. And at master’s level it was Gerrig and Zimbardo.
David G. Myers is another great author. Make it a point; do not consult books by any Pakistani authors on psychology.
I would like to add that I was not happy with my psychology papers, I was able to answer 95% of MCQ’s correct but in the subjective part, I didn’t write very long answers. The reason being that we had semester system at PU, our papers comprised of MCQ’s, Fill in the Blanks, True False and Short Answers. I was just out of practice of writing lengthy answers as a result. But short answers practice really paid off, it trains one to remember the key phrases and stay to the point.

The name of book is 'psychology and life' it is mentioned after the year of publication(2005). Once you are through PU's applied psychology department, writing a book's reference in APA(American Psychological Association) format becomes second nature. This book is available in the market in paper back. i think the price is 625 Rs, dont get it photocopied. Same goes for David G. Myers, his books are now available in paper back (special edition for south asia) published by Tata-Mcgraw Hill in India.
smalik, you need to give this subject atleast 1.5 months. Atleast this time.

3. you must buy cd lectures by virtual university on the subject. which are about 45 lectures , will take 45 hours! all of intricate concepts will reveal to you.

regards
[Do not go for notes. you must read a quality book.]

Default suggestion for psychology

dear smalik sahib i would also suggest u that donot go for psychology. i also appeared with psychology in 2009 but found it very tough and lengthy. though i had enough background in psychology yet i could not grasp it in a well manner.

so being a tyro in psychology never risk ur last attempt by selecting such technical subjects.

i am wholy agree with sir Bilal who has already mentioned the pros and cones of this subject. and i will also suggest the same reasons for not going for it.

okay tc

Smile Thanks!

Thank you all for replying but I think I am even more confused than ever about opting for this subject. Dr. Memon could you please be kind enough to tell me what was your score in this subject and do I need to be a student at VU to get the lecture CDs?

To be very honest with you, i had read psychology in 2007, but while taking papers of 2008 i didnot read it, except during paper gap of two days.
my marks in this subject were 64+51=115. Bro, This subject arouses my intrest, that is why it came very easy to me. keeping in view, how optionals were strictly checked, these number were better than in other subjects. With little more effort, i think i could have got upto 130.

You do not have to be their student. CD lectures are sold on nominal price of 250 RS. if you like, u can buy notes that come with it for another RS. 80, i think.
Bro, I do not know how you will be at this subject if u choose to take it in your optionals. Do one thing. read this subject for one week. and take an McQ test online or from psychology sources. or even on this forum, in psychology papers. if you are comfortable with most topics, then it means you are good at it, or,atleast, your aptitude wud be manifest.
For those, who say course of psychology is lengthy. i do not, personally agree with them. i found the course on psychology very precise, and defined.

Final decision shud be made by you, on the basis of your priorties ,fears, and suggestions by our worthy members.
if u need any guidance regarding it u r most welcome to ask.
regards.
