i hav a query....how many school of thoughts v hav in psychology....which r old schooLs of thoughts and which one r new or MODERN....

Structuralism
Functionalism
Psychoanalysis/Psychodynamic
Gestalt Psychology
Behaviourism
above mentioned are earlier schools of thought.
other are:
Humanistic Psychology
Cognitive Psychology
biological model

I think Psychoanalysis/Psychodynamics overlaps in both areas, it has stood the test of time & has evolved.

Structuralism & Functionalism are regarded as the main rival old school of thoughts, with Gestalt, Behaviorism & Psychoanalysis also mentioned in the same category.

Hi psychoanalysis is an established old school of thought in psychology. The term psychodynamic is sometimes used interchangeably with the term psychoanalysis but there is technical difference between the two. The psychodynamic schhols of thought are all those schools which emphasize the importance of psychic factors in the formation of human personality and which sees human personality resulting from the dynamic interaction of psychic forces. That's why the term psychodynamic has been suggested. Psychoanalysis is one such example. Other examples are Ego psychology, Object relations theorists, Interpersonal theorists, just to mention few.
