I think the book by Abdul Hamid Taga is quite comprehensive and according to the pattern of CSS exams. It covers almost all the major jurists, and jurists like; Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Ibne Khaldoon, Hegel, C.W.Mills, Herbert Spencer, Aguste Comte are in quite detail!

Secondly, It gives you a good inside out of the Social Problems with perspective to Pakistan (almost social problems are same everywhere - it has just related it to Pakistan and stated a comparison of Rural & Urban ares of Pak.)

Thirdly, it has MCQs and Short Questions at the end of every section and it can help you evaluate yourself about the understanding of the topic.

The only problem, I have with this book is that the language at some stages is not up to the standards and at places the text lacks continuity as the book has been compiled by taking information from diff books (as in Horton & Hunt, J.J. Macionis, Shankar Rao etc.). And, if you just concentrate while reading the book you can point that out and overcome such issues.
Therefore, I would say that you should go for Taga!
And you can use this site to further clear your concepts - www.sociologyguide.com

have you appeared for the CSS as yet? i see you have Muslim law and jurisprudence as well. i am using DF Mullah's Muhammadan law but it refers to old Indian cases, are those sufficient or should we look up for Pakistani cases as well. also, the book doesn't cover MFLO 1961 and how it is not in line with the sharia. what book would you recommend?

I was suppose to appear in CSS 2012, but I couldn't as I was not fully prepared and secondly I just started working at Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan, so I didn't want to miss out that opportunity and wanted to have that experience. Therefore I just let it go last year. But yes I'm quite determined to give my exam this year.
I haven't come across D.F. Mulla as I have already studied Islamic/Muslim Law during my LLB so I have made notes of my own but as I did my degree from univ of london I studied from their recommended books and guides, mostly English authors; Coulson, and Werner Menski and few handouts given by teachers. Secondly I haven't studied Islamic Jurisprudence so for that I'll be using; Islamic Jurisprudence by Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee. And I have couple of books in softcopies I'll consult that as well! Btw I haven't started this subject as I'm just laid back about it as I have done a portion of it already. Probably I'll start it in Nov along with Islamiat!

@VetDoctor yeah glad to hear about that! It's such a prestigious working place! Good Luck to your brother. I know TAGA is great to follow it has everything and covers all the topics of css exam.
@Natashaaa yeah it has fewer Pakistani case law but otherwise It's quite comprehensive, for that you can just google the topic for its cases. I used another book It's called introduction to Islamic Law by hinchcliff! Btw I have a soft copy of Islamic Jurisprudence by M. H. Kamali, and Inheritance Law by Muhammad Razi, I'll send you if you want it.

i have tried to Google the relevant cases but got no results, will try paklawsite or something. Want to get my hands on pearl and menski. Are you consulting horton and hunt for sociology? ive got 'a pakistani society' by iqbal chaudry and it's quite useless as it is more than a decade old, the statistics have all changed.. is hameed taga updated and talks about the current pakistani society?

@vetdoc: did you write statistics in your answers or make any diagrams or flowcharts. how imp is it to use headings?

For DMG/FSP on a Punjab domicile + Female Quota, I guess, you need to be among top 40-50 in the open merit list. This is an assumption based on the previous trend, however, the actual position would be clear when the number of seats/vacancies are announced by Establishment Division against these occupational groups.

Yes, a bit technical & conceptual. It requires little deep understanding of concepts & phenomena in Sociology. I'm sorry I do not possess any notes.

@Natashaaa
Yes at pakistanlawsite you'll get that stuff easily, I didn't mention before I thought you might not have a username. Secondly try to get your hands on some of your classmates and college peers they might help you with recent caselaw.
I know Iqbal Chaudry's is so vague and general, Taga is a lot better! but yeah the statistics are not recent in it as well! Before buying any book you should just make up your mind what you are looking for and just skim through the book! And if you find appropriate material! Just go for it!
And you'll have to get an equivalence certificate for your O & A Levels result form HEC. It would take a week or so!
