Despite the clichés parroted by most journalists that the ‘feudals’ control Pakistan — whatever that means — it has been many years now since that power shifted away towards urban and rural entrepreneurs and members of the services sectors. The power source have shifted towards urban/industrial/service sectors but not fully as the landlords still have major chunk of power in Pakistan. It is evident from the distribution of population on urban/rural basis. The rural areas have more population compare to urban areas and the rural voter always goes towards baradri and vested interest instead of idealogy when it comes to vote.
Moreover, big landlords are now settled in cities and have established themselves in industry and service sector but their political attachments are with their villages and baradari where they go to contest elections. So it can be concluded safely that power base still rest in rural areas as the rural areas have more seats in parliments compare to urban seats. The seat allocation on the basis of next Census may end the majority of rural seats in assambilies.
