Elements of Culture

culture refers to the meanings and ways of life

that characterize a society. The elements of culture include beliefs, values,

norms, folkways,mores,customs, law and sanctions.

Beliefs: are :IS" OR "IS NOT" e.g Prophet's (P.B.U.H) teachings

Values:"SHOULDS AND SHOULD NOTS" of our society e.g honesty

Norms:Standards of behaviour.Brown and Selznick defined it as"The norms

are blue prints for behaviour, setting limits within which individuals may seek

alternate ways to achieve their goals."

Folkways:According to Gillin and Gillin "Folkways are behavioural patterns of

everyday life which generally arise unconsciously in a group". can also be

called as norms of behaviour.Example:Shaking hands on contracts.

Mores:When notion of right and wrong is attached to folkways they are

called mores.

Customs:MacIver says "the socially accredited ways of acting are the

customs of society"

Laws are more or less systematic body of generalised rules.:blink

QS: What r the systems of forms of social classes?
ANS: Low ,middl n high???????

Definition:

in the words of MacIver and Page:

"A social class is a portion of community marked off from the rest by social

status...it is a sense of status sustained by economic, poltical or

ecclesiastical power and by the distinctive modes of life and cultural

expressions, that draws class apart from the class, give cohesion to each

class and stratifies the whole society"

Social classes are based on economic, political, social and religious ground

Division of society given by various sociologists:

Plato:According to Plato there are three classes present in a

society.a)Workers b)Soldiers c)Philosophers (who rules the society)

Aristotle:3 classes.a)the very rich. b)the very poor. c) in between.

Marx:There are two major classes a)Bourgeoise (the rich) b)Proletariat(the poor)

Throstein Veblen:2 casses a)Workers b)Leisure Class

Forms of classes in our society:

upper class , middle class , lower classs

Tribes Biraderies and caste system are also the different forms of classes

Argu about the present and future of family and give suggestions , then take problems of marriage today then predict its future like it would be pathetic then suggestions ;then do the same for elderly and youth. the single question will turn into 12 mini questions. because of time constraint I answered in bullets. in this paper I scored 81 with minimum correct mcqs.
