Thank you. I hope it gives good marks.
I would like to discuss formal and informal types of social control over human behavior. In addition, I want to know how do political, economic and religious institutions exercise formal control over human behavior. Plus I want to know, would religious institutions come under informal or formal social control?
Thanks in anticipation!

Informal Control: When an individual adapts his behavior as per the norms of the society in which he lives, in order to get social approval, then it is known as informal control. For example, if a person from Saudia Arabia or from Africa comes to Pakistan, soon, he will be wearing local dress to get social approval from the people around him, although there are no such laws about not wearing any other dress. Similarly, even if marrying with a person from other sects is allowed, but, still people mostly avoid such marriages just because of fear of social disapproval. So, it means that the society is informally controlling the behaviors of individuals. To sum up; in informal control, there are no penalties or documented laws but one has to change his behavior in order to avoid social disapproval.

Formal Control: When the behaviors of members of the society are controlled through formal laws & regulations, then it is called as formal control. For example, smoking is prohibited by law at public places & in educational institutes. In Pakistan, you have to drive your car on the left as per traffic regulations or else you will be ticketed.

Focus On:
1. Theorists (as many as you can. Preferrably 6 to 7. Check the syllabus)
2. Perspectives: Functionalism, interactionism, Conflict school of thought etc.
3. Current Affairs
4. Time Frame: depends on you.

If you know how to apply theories and discuss current affairs in relation with different theorists, you are pretty much done with this course and can look forward to achieving a good score. Hope was able to help, best of luck!
