Actually it is study of both quantitative and qualitative aspects of human population.

Quantitative aspects include composition, density, distribution, growth, movement, size, and structure of the population. Qualitative aspects are the sociological factors such as education quality, crime, development, diet and nutrition, race, social class, wealth, well being.

In nutshell following variables are often utilized for such studies/research works:

Composition of population, Births/birth rates/life expectancy rates, Deaths/death rates/mortality rates, fertility rates/reproduction rates, Marriages, Sex/gender, Education Level, Aging, Family size, Disease ratio, Crime ratio, Diet, Nutrition, Social Class, Wealth and income distribution, Human Development Index, Per Capita Income, Occupation, Employment Level, Labor Force, Growth, Density, Area, Migration, Rural vs Urban distribution, Nationality, Locality, Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Creed etc.

Regards.
