For people with good analytical skills in general and people who like to use logical reasoning in their arguments, this kind of paper (2010) was a piece of cake.

There is no problem in cramming/memorising stuff for Islamiat (or other subjects for that matter), but the effective skill required here is how you fit the right verse in the right place and deduce the required inference from the verse you had memorized. In this type of paper, your answers are rather tailored and highly focused.

For instance, before attempting every question, it is reasonable to spend 2-4 minutes in making a workable outline, in which you develop your main line of arguments instantaneously, recall the verses that you want to use, to prove or disprove the proposition of the Questioner. Additionally you may develop a series of (assumed) rebuttals to your own arguments (such as the usual stance of orthodoxy for a given issue e.g. feminism) and then counter the traditional arguments with the logic of Quran.

I followed this approach and found this paper the easiest among all (in 2010).

From my experience, I can give the following humble suggestions for those preparing to sit this year:

* Leave your Urdu ambitions in this one, and prepare w.r.t English as the medium.

* Get rid of the "text books" of Islam, especially dogar, jahangir, ikramullah etc, but also not required are Maududi, Dr. Hameedullah etc

* Download peer reviewed articles on atleast:
1. Ijtehad ,
2. Islamic feminism, so called, and women's rights, some of the authors that you may read are: Amina Wudud, Asma Barlas, Fatima Mernissi, Edip Yuksel, etc.
3. Islamic Economics,
4. Ethics in Islam,
5. Political model of Islam, democracy and human rights w.r.t Quran
6. Importance of inter-faith dialogue and harmony between religions

* In view of the current trend in Islamiat, the most important thing for you is to get hold of a Quranic Index and prepare all the topics through Quran. Directly borrowing verses from the Scripture is the most impressive thing that you can demonstrate in the short time of 30 minutes, for any given question. For every topic that you prepare, you should have 3-5 verses ready in your arsenal. Quoting Arabic is offcourse not obligatory, but if you have the time and aptitude for practicing this, its importance can't be discounted, seriously.

I personally suggest that mention atleast one thing: either the Arabic text, or the verse number (in format as this: [6:114] .... which means, chapter 6, verse 114). IF NOT BOTH. Use your cramming potential in this.

* Keep Quran as your ONLY text book. Don't bother about the various Imams, hadiths, tafsirs, etc unless you already know stuff from them and what to quote it. Focus your preparation on Quran. BECAUSE, in 30 minutes time, when you are finished with presenting the Quran's logic and its applicability in the modern era, you are done with the time. And you have to move on to the next question. You should act like a junior mujtahid in the examination hall, and present original and creative solutions by tracing the foundation of your logic in Quran. This methodology can be derived from Quran:

[16:89] We have sent down to you the book as a clarification for all things, a guide, mercy and good tidings for those who have peacefully surrendered.

[7:52] We have brought them a book which We have detailed with knowledge; a guide and a mercy to those who acknowledge.

[10:37] This Quran could not possibly be authored by other than GOD. It confirms all previous messages, and provides a fully detailed scripture. It is infallible, for it comes from the Lord of the universe.

[6:114] "Shall I seek other than God as a judge when He has sent down to you this book sufficiently detailed?"

So now you know that Quran is ACTUALLY the fountainhead of all knowledge about Islam that you need to know.

For any further details or guidance about Islamiat, you are welcome to send me an email (from my profile).

regards,

Riaz (awaiting result from 2010)

PS: My guess for the coming year: Dont forget to prepare 1. Rights and status of minorities in Islam, 2. Growing Islamophobia in the west and role of Muslims. etc
