1. Water is heated in a kettle. The inside water is heated by convection. A person sitting near the fire receives heat by :
a) Conduction b) Convection c) Radiation d) Reflection e) None of these its answer should be radiation not conduction because conduction is the heat transferred with in the body. when heat is radiated by the kettle the person sitting near the fire receives the heat
While radiation is transfer of heat through empty space (without any molecules, electrons or any other material) Convection is the transfer of heat through movement of molecules, in this case, the molecules of air (gases) transfer the heat, so correct answer is Convection. Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_transfer for more clearance of concept. Well I personally believe that the transfer of heat is at a time by all methods but almost always one method is predominant. So we consider that as correct answer. |
thanks for a reply.
i am still not convinced. as far as i know convection is basically vertical movement of heat. |
@silent volcano
i agree with you infra-red radiation reaches the person and he feels heat.so radiation is right answer. convection heats molecules ,hot and light molecule move up,person is not sitting up.cool molecules move downward so it seems that convection is not possible. radiation travels easily through air. |
@silent volcano
radiation travels easily through air.
firstly radiations travel through empty space, yeah you are right air does not stop traveling radiations. Okay lets do an experiment. Point A (A highSpeed fan)........Point B (sitting person)................point C( Source of heat). now if fan blows the air at about speed of 200 Km per hour or more. The person will feel almost no heat. Why? We know the moving air does not stop heat transfer while in this case it has almost stopped. How? because the transfer of heat was through a medium, gas molecules which are not not coming from the direction of source of heat. So what was the medium for transfer of heat? Had it been radiation, not even 600 km/hour blown air not been able to stop this transfer. because radiation is independent of movement of air. while convection needs movement of air molecules. So the main transfer of heat was by air and not radiation. |

Conduction- energy is transferred by the direct contact of molecules, not by the movement of the material Example: putting your hand on a stove burner. The amount of energy transferred depends on how conductive the material is. Metals are good conductors, so they are used to transfer energy from the stove to the food in pots and pans. Air is the best insulator, so good insulating products try to trap air and not allow it to move. Convection- energy is transferred by the mass motion of groups of molecules resulting in transport and mixing of properties Example: holding your hand over a stove burner. In meteorology, we speak of convection predominantly as that caused by rising currents of warm air. We refer to all other mass motions of air as advection. Radiation- energy is transferred by electromagnetic radiation Example: heat felt when standing away from a large fire on a calm night. Everything that has a temperature above absolute zero radiates energy. Radiation is not "felt" until it is absorbed by a substance. It does not require a medium to transfer energy through as do conduction and convection. question say"A person sitting near the fire receives heat by " so answer seems to be radiation. i hope its clear now |
Convection is not solely vertical or upward movement, yeah it easily occurs in upward direction.
prove my hypotheses wrong, as radiation is through electromagnetic radiations, so why did heat stop transferring when air in opposite direction was blown because Electromagnetic radiation don't depend on movement of air. So it must be something else not radiation. Okay brother, it seems I am not going to be convinced by you, and neither you are going to be convinced by me. contact some good physicist for right answer and also tell him about my argument and hypotheses. |
@ arbab
dear you are convinced ,but not ready to admit as far your hypothesis or experiment is concerned: heat radiation is transferred in the form of small packets of energy and when these packets are absorbed by a body it heats up. if air blows against source then these packets of energy will not reach body and one will not feel heat. now its your turn to prove your hypothesis or .... |
2. A time can come when we will be able to design a machine which can go on working f
you see the question asked is WITHOUT ENERGY and the solor energy is again an ENERGY, so the answer is NO
|
to put it in a layman's terms:
conduction is the heat transfer through contact...convection is the heat transfered through mixing and radiation is the heat emitted by a hot body...so the answer was radiation...any science student should have no doubts about it..:P @Arbab Danish: In reply to your hypothesis If we were to believe in your hypothesis then the following scenario must be true as well: it is a sunny day and a cool breeze from the sea is blowing inland...you would not feel as much heat as you would in case it was a sunny day and there was no breeze...so do you suggest that the sun suddenly radiated lesser amount of energy?...When you have a fire in the room, and you turn on a fan, radiation remains there, but its effect is lessened because of (assumingly) cold air that is being thrown at you by the Fan.... secondly energy transfer is not through a single process alone...in most cases there are many modes of transfer...in a room, with a heater on, you receive energy through both convection and radiation and probably conduction too in case you have a fall on the fire :ohmy:.....in a scenario where you would be directly in front of the fire, the major chunk of energy transfer would be radiation, if you are behind some wall or anything it will be convection... |
Assalam-o-Alaikum,
Convection is the movement ov molecules within fluid (Liquids, gases & Rheids), Radiation should be da answer! Only Hermaphroditism iz a form ov Sexual reproduction. Rest belong to Asexual..dat iz for sure! |
Energy can be converted into matter or other forms of energy but can not be produced.a machine can not produce energy without consuming matter or any other form of energy,it only converts one form into another.This is a well established and well known fact of mechanics.so the answer should be no.
-convection is the right answer coz radiation onli takes place where dere is no medium ..
-and conduction onli takes place onli in solids .. -covection needs sum fluid to transfer heat. So in dis case , air acts as a fluid
Please note convection takes place in liquids, conduction takes place in solids and gases where as radiation phenomenon in which radiant energy is released is only observe if the pot containing water is heated to an extent so that it start glowing and emit light which is actually the radiant energy(e.g of radiation phenomenon is SUN emitting heat waves and if an IRON piece is put on fire for a long time so it gets really hot and emit radiation). The answer of this very first MCQ is conduction, reason being that conduction is the gradual transfer of heat from high concentration end to lower concentration end. In this case AIR act as a medium and transfer the heat energy. The physics involve behind is that when water in pot is heated up, the high energy atoms gains energy and releases electron, thus water moecules are converted into vapors, the vapors emnating from the surface of water are hot interact with the atoms of air molecules and air molecues standing at lower energy level gains energy and starts to vibrate, this way the transfer of energy from one air molecule passes to another and spread in the near environment. I have confirmed this with a Physics professor. Regarding those members who have written Radiation, for them radiation only takes place in electromagnetic range and in this case it is not a valid answer. Hope this helps clarify the concept behind this tough MCQ. |

Well the answers of MCQs are correct but as i feel few mistakes are there which can be correct.
1. Hepatitis A is transmitted by Faeces not water. 2. Animal obtained carbohydrate from Glycogen not starch( it is used in plants) |
42. if i remeber correctly, bronchiole is correct.
44. is a strong magnet, i got this wrong 40. is actually basal metabolism. mine went wrong too. 37. is multiple genes. 24. is kenya 11. 3 feet. got this wrong too. I know 8 of mine are confirmed wrong. I hope don't lose more than 5 others. Hopefully could end up getting 37-39 in EDS objectives. 41. should be vitamin C As for Hepatitis A, it is a tricky question. It goes from individual to medium through faeces, but from medium to individual through water. Nobody knows what the examiner had in mind when he made the paper. i myself put water. |
Dear Sakk,
I don't know who that professor was but one thing is for sure that the type of radiation you were referring to is called "Electromagnetic Radiation" and not simple radiation. Furthermore, for all those who think its Convection or Conduction then why is the car's radiator called called a Radiator? although the water at the surface of the radiator gets heated by conduction and then that heat spreads via convection throughout the radiator, but the heat from the radiator is transferred via radiation!! i hope this will be enough.. As far as hepatitus is concerned, it is spread by feaces. the agent that gets transfered from one body to another is the feaces. the medium through which it gets transferred is water (probably it may not be able to get transferred through air) there is a difference between agent and the medium!!!
I have answered that already! that will be called Radioactive Radiation! there is a difference... the Sun does not emit radiation because it is hot. It is hot because there are is Fusion reaction going there and that is why energy is released. For Iron to emitt radiations (Electromagnetic Radition that is) one has to heat it to insanely high temperatures. The physics involve behind is that when water in pot is heated up, the high energy atoms gains energy and releases electron, thus water moecules are converted into vapors, the vapors emnating from the surface of water are hot interact with the atoms of air molecules and air molecues standing at lower energy level gains energy and starts to vibrate, this way the transfer of energy from one air molecule passes to another and spread in the near environment. brother you have misunderstood the concept again! when water turns into vapors it does not release electrons. it just breaks the bonds between the water molecules and escape to the surrounding. it does not loose electrons. if it were loosing electrons we would not be calling water vapors (because if the number of electrons decrease/increase it turns into ions and no longer remain molecules) |
Let it be faeces, i was counting it incorrect anyways.
My take on the first one is also radiation. Conduction is impossible (air is a very poor conductor), only possibilities are convection and radiation. Infact both do occur, which is required is the issue. What is your (Umar's ) take on objective 10? Highly confusing one it is. |
brother...the answer to this one is that light is visible....if it were not visible, dust particles or vaccum, or anything, you wouldnt be able to see it in the first place...the dust particles were just a catch..
opaque etc etc don't make any sense :) |
As an engineer its my opinion that its against basic laws of science
