The American Colonization Society (in full, The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America), founded in 1816, was the primary vehicle to support the "return" of free African Americans to what was considered greater freedom in Africa. You are also right.
But I had read it in an article that their main aim is to form colonies in Africa. This was only for Expansion of America. Because Americans had spent a lot of time as British colonies. So now they want to be the master.
