CSS 2022 - Preparing Optional Subjects, Particularly Criminology

Hello everyone.

I'm a CSS 2022 aspirant and am just starting out in my journey. Having an educational background in business administration, I've selected the following optional subjects for myself:

1. International Relations
2. History of USA
3. Business Administration
4. Criminology
5. Sociology

The reason behind the selection of such topics is that IR and US history have a substantial amount of syllabus overlapping (with CA as well). As for Bus Admin & Sociology, I have covered them in my undergraduate degree.

For criminology, however, my sole reason for selection is that I have heard it is a high scoring subject - and none of the other subjects piqued my interest.

Thus, I want to know if there is anyone here who has previously scored well in any of these subjects (most importantly Criminology) and can provide apt guidance.

Thank you! :)

Thank you! :)
First, sole reason to opt subjects should be given to one's interest and scoring/non scoring factor should be considered at last. Because scoring trends change each year and it can be fatal.

Second, why didn't you opted International Law in place of criminology, as international relations are dependent on I. Law so much. International Relations, US History and International Law complement each other.

Overall your optionals are good to go but at least give I. Law a second thought. It is not tough as it looks like.

Best of luck!

Copying my answer to a similar question from last year:

"I opted for Criminology twice and both times it gave good score although it is not as rewarding as it used to be, say, in 2017 or 2018.
The thing I like most about it is that you can score relatively well even with average preparation (but only if your basic concepts are clear and you consult the right preparation material)."

It also helped that I found the subject material rather interesting. So you may go ahead and opt for it if the other subjects don't tickle your fancy.

Here is the link to the DMCs of 2020 written, most people who opted for Criminology scored below 40. It's not a scoring subject anymore as a large no. of people are opting it.

Is there a similar thread with unsuccessful candidates' DMCs for CSS-2021?
