Packaged milk: Media stopped from reporting lab report
By Our Staff Reporter
Friday, 02 Apr, 2010
LAHORE, April 1: A test report about tetra pack milk samples prepared by a German laboratory has been submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC), however, on the request of private milk manufacturing companies the court has barred the media from reporting the contents of the report.

The counsel for milk manufacturers said if the contents of the report were reported in the media, it would unleash media trial of the manufacturers affecting their image.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah observed: “The media is directed not to report on the contents of the report submitted by Eurofins Global Cenral, Hamburg, Germany, dated February 22, 2010, till further orders. The office is directed to intimate the media accordingly.”

Justice Shah said this while hearing a petition by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party Pakistan about the supply of adulterated milk by the companies supplying packaged milk.

The court directed all parties involved in the case to obtain the copies of the report and file their reply in one month.

The judge adjourned hearing till April 28 and directed the Lahore city district government, the environmental protection department of Punjab, the livestock and dairy development department, the food department, the PCSIR and the PSQCA to send their officers fully versed with milk manufacturing process to the court along with all relevant reports prepared by them.

Also, amicus curie Barrister Sidra Fatima Sheikh sought court’s permission to release the fee to the German laboratory, however, the judge said that the matter would be taken up on the next hearing.

The judge asked the lawyer to place on record the invoice received from the laboratory.

The judge also appointed Dr Shahjahan Baig, PCSIR food and bio technology section head, Dr Faqir Anjum from institute of food science, Agriculture University Faisalabad, and Dr Shagufta Feroze, PhD (holistic nutrition), USA, as amicus curie to assist the court on the matter.

Default Court Action

Lahore High Court Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Thursday accepted a request to restrain the media from reporting the contents of a test report about Tetra milk samples prepared by Eurofins Global Control, Germany.

The court was hearing a petition against the supply of adulterated milk, and on its directions samples of the milk were sent to Germany for testing. As the report was submitted in the court, the counsel for the milk manufacturers requested that the media should not be allowed to report the contents of the test. The counsel said that it would unnecessarily lead to the manufacturers media trial before determination of the actual issue and will adversely affect the image of the companies.

Justice Mansoor observed, `The media is directed not to report the contents of the report submitted by Eurofins Global Control, Germany dated February 22, 2010 till further orders. The court’s office is directed to intimate the media accordingly.’ Barrister Zafarullah Khan had moved this petition in which he submitted that 80 percent milk supplied to the market was poisonous and was the source of deaths of citizens. He contended that out of the 19,718 samples of milk collected by the Food Department in the last five years, almost 17,529 samples were adulterated.

this case began in june 2009
from that month onwards progress is going on
but no restriction on sale of such products
lot of pressure by the product companies to hide fact.
case is prolonged for so much time
i don't think anything is going to come out of this

People still criticize the Muslim rule in the sub-continent but forget glory of their reigns. Alas ! We don’t have personalities like Ala-au-Din Khiliji who used to inflict dreadful punishments on such unscrupulous souls.

Sabun banane ka formula.

Nice sharing Doctor.

it is said by companies and in media that middle man who collects milk is responsible for these things.
nobody can catch middle men.
shameful and pathetic, such big companies and cannot have farms and right way of collecting milk and dependent on middle men.
people who do this must make an example.
this is one food product,no one knows how many other product in the name of multinational companies are harming the people.
this adulteration has led to diseases which were never so common in our country before.
we have no research and labs for determining quality of food products.
recently a survey and testing done in lahore showed that 93% of the daily products are of 'C' class and adulterated.
nobody to catch such criminals

Adulteration in ghee and oil

Sunday, 18 Apr, 2010
AS reported in Dawn (March 30), the curse of adulteration in food items is so pervasive that a wide variety of ghee and edible oil is stated to be contaminated.

This horrible information was disclosed by no less a person than the federal minister of science and technology, who is also in charge of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).

The minister, while complaining about the shortage of funds and inadequate infrastructure at the disposal of the ministry, brought to the notice of parliament the malice of widespread adulteration in oil and ghee.

Although the prime minister was also attending the proceedings, surprisingly no reaction was shown by him or ruling party members on this dreadful disclosure as reported in the news.

Ghee and oil are some of the most extensively consumable food items of the kitchen. Only proper survey and investigation can unveil to what extent consumption of 90 per cent contaminated foodstuff over a period of time has damaged the health of the people.

The most surprising aspect of this episode, however, is that the ministry of science and technology took such a long time to disclose the malady which affects every household of the country.

The PSQCA, a self-financed organisation working with 81 scientists/engineers and 254 supporting staff, is also a member of the International Organisation for Standardisation, International Electro-technical Commission and International Organisation of Legal Metrology.

Its main function is to foster and promote standards and conformity assessment as a means of advancing the national economy, promoting industrial efficiency and development, ensuring the health and safety of the public, protecting consumers, etc.

What penal action has the PSQCA taken against the manufacturers/importers of unhygienic ghee and oil? Why weren’t those who indulged in unhealthy activities exposed in the media? These questions need to be answered by the ministry concerned and the PSQCA.

In the meanwhile initiate penal proceedings should be initiated against all irresponsible ghee and oil manufactures/importers who have caused incalculable loss to public health.

and i wonder why diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, kidney failure and cancer are increasing automatically and mostly young people are getting affected ,must be some real damaging factor involved
there was a report lately where in lahore a building is sealed where ghee is prepared from the intestines of animals, chickens and fats of cattle specially from cows.and is packed in renowned names packings and sale at good centres.

Packaged milk ‘fit for use’
German lab says toxicological issues may be present but outside scope of investigation

Thursday, April 29, 2010
By Our Correspondent

LAHORE

AN analytical report, prepared by a German laboratory, has given a clean chit to packaged milk companies and the milk they are supplying has been declared ìfit for human consumption.î

The report duly signed by a state-certified food chemist of Germany, Sascha Schmidt, said that they had done the examination of milk samples with all due diligence and the samples had been obtained in Hamburg in perfect conditions with all seals intact.

All samples were photographed and opened under witness and the result of test conducted by the Eurofins Global Control, Hamburg, Germany, indicated that all the milk samples were fit for human consumption, the chemist said, adding that their judgment was only valid for the sample analysed and the parameters, which had been checked.

‘There might be other toxicological issues like heavy metals and mycotoxins, which might cause problems, but which were not in the scope of this investigation,’ he added, in a covering note addressed to the Lahore High Court.

The state chemist said that Dr Nader, managing director of the Eurofins Global Control, would visit Punjab soon and would be available to give further support for this very important project.

Earlier, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on April 1 had barred the media from publishing the report when private milk manufacturing companies expressed anxiety about unfavourable report and requested the court that the report should not be published by the media.

They had taken a plea that if the contents of the report were published by the media, it would lead to their media trial before determination of actual issue and would adversely affect their image.

However, on Wednesday, the judge allowed the media to publish the report, which came in favour of the milk companies, in order to inform the consumers of the packaged milk.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was hearing a petition filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of the Watan Party Pakistan against the supply of adulterated milk by private milk manufacturing companies. The judge adjourned the hearing till May 18.

Objections to milk report
Saturday, May 01, 2010
By Our Correspondent

LAHORE

THE Watan Party on Friday objected to the analytical report of a German laboratory which had declared the packaged milk “fit for human consumption,” termed the report defective and prayed the Lahore High Court to send it back to the laboratory for a complete analysis.

In a reply submitted in the court, petitioner Yaqoob Bhatti, through his counsel Barrister Zafarullah Khan, said that complete test of quality of milk was either not performed or its result were not mentioned regarding the SNF, milk density, lactose, protein, added water, conductivity, presence of sodium hydroxide, starches, sugar and microbial and fungal toxins.

The petitioner said the presence of formaldehyde in milk was 2mg per Kg which, as per the report, indicated contamination of milk dangerous for human health for being carcinogenic. The element was used to preserved dead bodies, he submitted in his reply, adding that variable level of urea in all brands could be because of addition of urea as adulterant. Sodium was 10 to 50 per cent higher than normal in 5 out of 6 full cream brands and it not only added to milk solids but could be an important content of adulterating chemical, he said, adding that freezing point of two brands was beyond the limit of pure milk which was an indication of adulterant. He said acidity of six brands was below 6 whereas in a brand it was 4.5 at which milk souring occured. That could be due to acid production before sterilization.

The petitioner said levels of adulterant increased in summer as compared to winter during which these samples were taken. He said detailed testing of milk fatty acids was not needed at all as there had never been an issue of fatty acids profiles instead fats of vegetables origin could be checked. It would be important to know that why abovementioned tests of the SNF etc were kept out of the scope of the milk testing, the petitioner questioned.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah was hearing a petition against supply of adulterated milk by private milk manufacturing companies and the next proceedings would be on May 18.
