Default US ambassador summoned in Foreign Office

US ambassador summoned in Foreign Office

Updated at 430 PST Friday, March 18, 2011

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office on Friday summoned the US ambassador and lodged a strong protest over a drone strike in a tribal region which killed 44 people.

US Ambassador Cameron Munter was told "that such strikes were not only unacceptable but also constituted a flagrant violation of humanitarian norms and law," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Civilian and military leaders have already strongly condemned Thursday's drone strike against a militant hideout in North Waziristan tribal region and demanded an apology and explanation from the US.

Civilians and police were among those killed when US missiles ploughed into a militant training compound in Datta Khel town, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Miranshah, the main town in tribal North Waziristan.

The ministry said that Munter was met by foreign secretary Salman Bashir who conveyed "a strong protest" regarding Thursday's attack by a CIA-operated pilotless drone.

"It was evident that the fundamentals of our relations need to be revisited. Pakistan should not be taken for granted nor treated as a client state," the statement said.

"It was for the White House and the State Department to hold back those who have been trying to veer Pakistan-US relationship away from the track."

The ministry said Pakistan would not attend a meeting in Brussels with officials from the Washington and Kabul on security in Afghanistan, scheduled for March 26.

Ambassador Munter said that he understood clearly that this was not a "pro forma demarche" (a formality) and that he would rush to Washington to convey Pakistan's message to the highest levels of the US administration, the ministry said.

Pakistan must stand for its citizens. Our government must come up with lot more courage and integrity.

Pakistan's governemnt is his master's vice. Instead of summoning sir kamron munter, pakistan govt. should have written letter of thanks to the US ambassador, for "showering rose petals by drones" to appreciate, the disposal of "honorable" "innocent" sir raymond davis. to USA

After so many people are killed in drone attacks, pakistani gov is only asking for an "Explanation and apology". Is that sufficient? If something similar happens only once in USA and only 5 people are killed, will they spare anyone? We talk against Israel, but they attacked a country only because 2 of their soldiers were kidnapped .. USA killed millions and captured an entire country just because some alleged terrorists killed 3000 citizens of America .. count the number of people killed in drone attacks and pakistani gov still says "Apology" is required, no action.

I also blame the army and judiciary for this, Both have lost the respect I used to have for them.

Rather citizens should come up with decisive demonstration. Government will act when it realizes, and its we who have to make it realize that "Now Do Something".

You should praise the Govt and Kiyani in that they atleast mustered up courage to ask for explanation and apology.

I wonder you still compare Pakistan with America and Israel. I am disappointed.

Unfortunately Pakistan is a country, that works fine for the US! They are eager to kill, discriminate and pursue their countrymen rather than to defend themselves against their enemies!

@mukt Your Words reminds me of a bitter, dark joke that was told before the invasion of Afghanistan.
GWB and Rumsfeld go to declare the war and explain their strategy.
"Strategy?!" asked GWB. "You thought about a strategy?!" -
Rumsfeld: "Sure! We go to kill 4 million Muslims and an Jewish dentist!"
GWB "What!!!!!" - "Why you think about to kill a jewish dentist!!!?"
Rumsfeld: "Here we have the evidence! - Nobody will ask for the 4 million Muslims!"

So, Nobody is gonna take action against these strikes. Is is enough to ask them that "kindly explain us why have u killed 44 innocent Pakistanis Indiscriminately and barbarically " Is it enough?
Btw what else we can do ...Beggars are not choosers

Yes Beggars cant be choosers. They must remain beggars and keep begging. The Americans will explain it away as collateral damage and say sorry for it and will then force some dollars down the mouth of our protesting officials. Sovereignty Vindicated!

And what about those innocent tribals killed? We can of course forget them IN SUPREME NATIONAL INTEREST.
