Ups and downs in the Pak-US relations is not new rather they show historical transitions since Liaquat Ali khan's visit to USA and prioritizing capitalist democracy over red giant i.e.USSR. This was followed by SEATO ,CENTO, AFGHAN JIHAD and war on terror. However during ZA Bhutto's period the relationships witnessed slight change.
Pakistan's development was not possible without US assistance. War on terror bears the testimony that Pakistan has played its due role and suffered huge loss in both forms i.e.men & material.
National interests of both countries coincide in Afghanistan. Afghan's exit strategy and future of Afghanistan is important for both as stakes are there. Pakistan needs peace while at the same time avoiding spill over terrorist impacts. America also needs a safe and prosperous exit while some theorists deny this and present "new great game" as a motive for the long stay in a difficult area.
Relationships worsened due to drone strikes. Difference of opinions also prevails on the usage of drone technology. Some surveying firms put evidence of civilian casualities while other negate it and provide support to its usage. Apart from this, repetitive allegations on Pakistani intelligence agencies playing dubious role by American officials like Leon Panetta had made situation worse.
In such state of affairs Pak-US relations have carrot and stick type of future. In other words, transition between good and worse may be the probable but complete disconnection as demanded by Islamist groups and difa-e-Pakistan council is not in the national interest of both. The actual future of relationship depends upon Pakistani leadership specially military bureaucracy. But the bottom line is that both nations have national interests so it depends on leadership that how the policy is formed and implemented.
