Stockholm Syndrome... Is this what we are suffering???

A few days ago, I read a column on BBC Urdu in which the writer Mr. Wusat Ullah Khan, though in a bit hilarious way, was saying that rightist parties & the people who are morally supporting the militants & anti-state actors in Pakistan, are actually suffering from a psychological condition known as "the Stockholm Syndrome". A person or group suffering from this syndrome actually develops a liking/love for oppression & the oppressor. Actually the pariah is so much ill treated & abused after completely overpowering him that any lack of abuse or slightest reduction in abuse is magnified in his mind as an act of great kindness & he develops a positive feeling for the abuser.

He supported his argument with some strong evidences like the Muslims of Gujarat, India though, are thoroughly suppressed & ill-treated by Hindu extremist groups, still vote & elect people from extremist groups. According to him, same was true in Vietnam & still now in many parts of the world it happens when the oppressed groups start loving & supporting their oppressors. Like in Pakistan, there are millions of people out there, who are always looking for slightest positive signs from the militants to call them patriots, the true & kind Muslims who have devoted their lives for a great cause. Like recently, few people even called HakeemUllah Mehsud a "Shaheed". According to the writer, Pakistani Nation in general is suffering from this syndrome due to prolonged war, bestiality & ruthlessness shown by extremists & repeated failures on the part of security agencies. So the writer concluded that Pakistan needs to fight this war on Psychological grounds as well & needs to develop a policy to combat this irrational mental inclination of its masses.

Stockholm syndrome is possible within a cloistered group especially which has little social mobility and is exclusive. My point is the syndrome has been observed in small groups but calling a whole nation to be suffering from the syndrome is sheer absurdity! Its like undermining all the intellect of the people! Anyways, the fact is that their are sympathizers of the TTP on ideological basis.

Well I think the reasons lie in psychological evolution of people of this country. History and religion play an important role in this. We, as Muslims, hold a strong belief in autocratic systems and strong governments. This has something to do with the process of rise of early Islam as well as its teachings which enforce strict control over several aspects of life. This is unlike in the West where Christianity was unable to establish itself politically and thus, eventually, marginalized to being a religion only. Over here we still have people who want the same rise of Islam, and they, somehow, find a religious backing from (some) people :D. So I feel belief is involved in this, not obsession of the oppressors, or Stockholm syndrome whatever :dd.

Actual problem is that our minds are not ready to accept those oppressors as terrorists who were chanted as heroes not very long time ago. You may call it Stockholm syndrome or Psychological disorder but due to our dual policies & contrast educational systems, this nation has been deliberately divided into many segments.

There is no psychological disorder, it is our fate :D, we simply evolved in such a way that wealth and prosperity of 'this world' was not a destiny of many people, therefore they are still willing to lay down their lives for what they assume is better for 'afterlife'. This problem will remain unless they are not assured that Jewish and Christian cultures are not coming to replace our own and that worldly progress and peace are also a blessing from God and that religion is not just for politics and political rule, its much more than that; in other words the solutions of problems faced by this society can be sought in religion, not liberal values and principles. They will simply keep resisting as long as they get a feeling that Liberalism will replace the authority of Allah's rule. Else you need enough muscle to eliminate that thought process from entire society, not just a band of militants, and that muscle can only come with strong faith (in Liberalism if that's what is wanted :D).

Stockholm Syndrome (in our case, ambivalent attitude toward Taliban) seems to be the natural consequence of political Islam which has massive support in Pakistan, considering that it happens to be the state-sanctioned ideology. I don't see anything surprising there.

Is he collected proof that all muslim vote for extremist group. In both India and Pakistan election result never depend on voters. it is always pre seleccted.

I put here another example "Hougo chavez" of "Vanzvela" was declared rebelious and then put in jail but people of his country made him president for 3 consuctive terms because of his good policies and development in the country. not because of his cruelty.
if cruelty will be forcefull thing than in Pakistan, why Musharaf is out of Govt? I think he had enough power.

Pakistan make war of Afghanistan its war. it is not at all war of Pakistan.
if people of tribal area declare militants their leader that dosent mean that this is due to threat, or they all are Psychological patients, Not at all, Like "chavez" Afghan leaders are good for their own people, that may be bad in our point of view not for people of that area.
if you continously teases a calm dog he will bark on you in return at last. so if you are continously attacking on Afghan and north waziristan and dont allow them peace full life and you expect that they will sit calmly then this is your foolishness.
so to take their revenge they select best people from their own tribes and area who will protect their basic rights.

Dear,as we have heard the slogan GEO R JENY DO on t.v channels,so if we apply this slogan in our daily life on Collective basis, this would be a peaceful place. The anarchy in the whole world is due to the fact that we poke our nose in someone's else affairs. You quoted an example of a sleeping dog being distributed by others, then in turn he attacks on you,if the same dog try to bite you,you definitely will save yourself,as the case of SWAT and in return OPERATION RAh E NIjAT.
