Default Energy Crisis in Pakistan

Must read
Pakistan is one of the most populous, geographically and strategically important countries located in South Asia. Pakistan is suffering from energy crises since last four decades. Pakistan produces about 81 per cent of its electricity through oil and gas, which costs us about 9.4 billion dollars.

In other words, these costs make 53 per cent of our total exports and are a significant cost burden on the products which we purchase from other countries. Our demand for thermal power is so large that we simply cannot knock it down and magically move to hydropower.

Instead of using oil and gas, both of which are getting more expensive and have volatile international prices, we can move to the use of coal. Thar coal is an essential asset for producing power at very reasonable expenses. We should ask the media to make the consumers aware of using electricity only when needed.

And what about the pollution that will result due to coal consumption. We are already facing smog.

There is no such thing as 'Demand for thermal power' and yes we can magically move towards hydro power. It is cheap and also environment friendly if dams are built keeping in view the conservation of environment instead of directions of foreign sponsors.

Hi Sheharyar,
Many thanks for sharing this useful data on Energy Crisis in our country.
We know that there is a huge pressure on energy supplying resources and collectively we should save energy and use it in the most needed hours.
But what approach do we have as individual?
We have been facing energy crisis for the last four decades. We have increased our needs. We use personal vehicles instead of public transport.
The students of the Oxford University come on bicycles while in Pakistan an Intermediate student can't join his college without having a motorbike!
