Default No letup in violence

NWFP is in the grip of violence in spite of all out efforts by the government to control the situation. Two people were killed in the clashes that continued in Pewar, Tarimangal and some areas of lower Kurram Agency despite announcement of a complete ceasefire by the warring tribes in Parachinar and Sadda area. About 128 people including 12 security personnel had been died and more than three hundred people have been wounded in the recent clashes. Apparently, the local Taliban, who are predominantly Sunni, are trying to take over the strategically important area, which is inhabited by the Shia majority. All roads had been blocked due to the clashes and there is a shortage of edibles in these areas. The other day, Governor NWFP Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai visited the Parachinar and held talks with members of the peace jirga while troops moved into the violence-hit area. There is weight Orakzai’s assertion that deployment of forces for maintaining peace in Fata was no solution to the problem and that the people would have to strive for peace in their respective areas. One expected that after the deliberations of the peace jirga and announcement of the ceasefire, the situation would gradually return to normalcy, but that does not seem to be the case. In another theatre of battle, Swat, curfew has been lifted and traffic is seen on roads in Mingora, Kanjo, Saido Sharif and Barikot. According to official figures, more than 220 people including five soldiers have been killed. But the military operation goes no as militants continue to offer stiff resistance to the security forces. In Pabbi, the residents of Swat and Shangla who had to leave the area due to violence, staged a protest and demanded an end to the military operation in Swat. The residents will keep facing such difficulties till militancy is completely rooted out and peace is restored.

While imposing emergency, the government had taken the plea that it had become extremely difficult for it to fight the extremist threat that had spread to the settled parts of the country, including the capital. The other day President Musharraf said that foreigners based in Pakistan were planning terrorist attacks around the world which forced the government to clamp emergency. However, the operation that was undertaken after Mualana Fazlullah had almost established a parallel government in Swat could have been launched without the imposition of emergency. The government’s laxity in taking action against his illegal FM radio and intimidation of locals allowed him to raise his own army. Had the government been alive to the threat that the extremists posed, it would not have been difficult for it to convince the government of NWFP to take firm action against militant elements. If the government can launch a full-fledge operation in Balochistan, where the MMA was a coalition partner, it could have taken a stance for such an action in NWFP as well. It would be too harmful for the reputation of the government if it fails to tackle extremism. The critics will get an opportunity to castigate the government for its ill-advised action. The government needs to make concerted efforts and leave no stone unturned to win a battle upon which the very existence of the state is hinged. The threat which the extremists pose has been amply demonstrated in the horrific incident of Lal Masjid and the subsequent spat of suicide bombing in which there has been no let up since July.
