Post MQM back in govt to ‘face challenges’

KARACHI: Governor Sindh, Dr Ishratu-Ebad has announced Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s return to the government, Geo News reported.

Dr Ebad made this public during a press conference here Wednesday.

He said it was a difficult political decision but we boldly saw it fit to make a comeback in the greater interest of the country especially to face challenges at hand.

Henceforth, he said, we will take all the provincial and federal offices, which our MNAs/ MPAs quit earlier, and work with the government in pursuit of a prosperous Pakistan.

Dr Ebad said the MQM Quaid Altaf Hussian gave us go-ahead after he understood that our being in the government was vital to the country.

He sang praises for the reconciliation efforts of President Asif Ali Zardari, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, and others.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Sindh, Qaim Ali Shah extolled Altaf Hussain’s political vision saying he has made a patriotic decision.

Pushing the envelope further, he said that all the breaches in the ties have been filled, thorns removed, reservations quashed, and hatchets buried, adding now PPP, and MQM stand as one.

We will now work together to make this coalition work, said Qaim concluding his talk.

Steve Jobs dies: Apple chief created personal computer, iPad, iPod, iPhone

By NED POTTER and COLLEEN CURRY

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died, Apple said. Jobs was 56.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," read a statement by Apple's board of directors. "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

The homepage of Apple's website this evening switched to a full-page image of Jobs with the text, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

Clicking on the image revealed the additional text: "Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 and, with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak, marketed what was considered the world's first personal computer, the Apple II.

Shortly after learning of Jobs' death, Wozniak told ABC News, "I'm shocked and disturbed."
Industry watchers called him a master innovator -- perhaps on a par with Thomas Edison -- changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

In 2004, he beat back an unusual form of pancreatic cancer, and in 2009 he was forced to get a liver transplant. After several years of failing health, Jobs announced on Aug. 24, 2011 that he was stepping down as Apple's chief executive.

Virus Infects U.S. Drones

A virus has infiltrated American drones like the ones used to kill al Qaeda chief Anwar al-Awlaki and others, military officials said Friday. So far, none of the missions carried out by the unmanned attack crafts have been interfered with, but specialists fear that the virus is recording drone pilots’ every move and are trying—so far unsuccessfully—to erase it. As a preventative measure, drone use has reportedly been suspended while the virus is being investigated. Drones have been used to kill more than 2,000 people since President Obama was elected, and have been a particularly important tool in the war on terror, where they have been used to hit terrorists in remote parts of Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Ghazal king Jagjit Singh dies in Mumbai hospital

NDTV Correspondent
Monday, October 10, 2011

Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh died this morning at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai after he suffered a brain hemorrhage. Mr Singh was 70.

He was admitted to hospital on September 23, hours before he was scheduled to perform at a concert in the city. Doctors kept him in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) till he died. Reports say he had been on life support for the last few days. Mr Singh is survived by his wife, Chitra.

Jagjit Singh was born on February 8, 1941 in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, to Amar Singh Dhiman, a government employee, and Bachan Kaur. He had four sisters and two brothers and was called Jeet by his family.

He was raised as a Sikh by religion. His birth name was Jagmohan but his Sikh father rechristened him as Jagjit following the advice of his guru.

It was Mr Singh's father, who first recognised his son's talent. He sent young Jagjit to learn the nuances of music under a blind teacher, Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma. He later trained under Ustad Jamal Khan of the Sainia Gharana for six-years and gained knowledge in Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad forms.

His debut album in 1976-The Unforgettable - did not make a hollow claim. Mr Singh made his mark with hits like Yeh zindagi kisi aur ki, mere naam ka koi aur hai, Patta-patta boota-boota haal hamaara jaane hai, Hontho se chhoo lo tum, Tum ko dekha, Hazaar baar ruke ham and hazaar baar chale, at a time when ghazals were rendered by powerhouses like Mehdi Hasan, Noor Jehan, Beghum Akhtar and Talat Mehmood.

One of the most successful and loved artistes of his time, he has left behind a huge body of work in a career spanning five decades, including 80 albums.

Among his most memorable numbers were Tum itna jo muskara rahe ho, Apni Marzi Se Kahan Apne Safar Ke Hum Hain and Pehle Har Cheez Thi Apni Magar Ab Lagta Hai Apne Hi Ghar Mein Kisi Doosre Ghar Ke Hum Hain.

Critics often suggested he sacrificed technique for melody. It didn't matter to the thousands of fans that enabled the album to set sales records. Writer Khuswant Singh commented, "He sings better than Mehdi Hassan and looks better than Dilip Kumar."

Mr Singh married Chitra Datta in 1970. She belonged to a musical family in Kolkata and had been married when she was very young to a man who ran a sound recording studio. Chitra was a popular jingle singer and her marriage had unravelled by the time she met Mr Singh. They first worked on jingles for ad films together. Then came Unforgettable.

Through films like Saath Saath and director Mahesh Bhatt's debut, Arth, their popularity climaxed. The Singhs travelled the world for sold-out concerts. Perhaps their best work together was in the teleseries made by Gulzar on Mirza Ghalib. In 1990, their only child, Vivek, died in a road accident. Chitra gave up singing. Mr Singh cut back drastically on his albums and concerts, opting instead to lend his support to campaigns for children's causes. Man Jite Jagjit, containing Sikh devotional Gurbani, was the first album he recorded after his son's demise.

The Padma Bhushan awardee is also the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in two albums, Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna (2002).

Mr Singh was planning to team up with Gulzar again after the success of Mirza Ghalib for an album based on the letters and poems of the 18th century poet.

Default Entry of turncoats in Tehrik-i-Insaf frustrates workers in KP

By Zulfiqar Ali | 10/10/2011

PESHAWAR, Oct 9: The recent induction of some `turncoats` in Pakistan Tehriki-Insaf (PTI), which is very optimistic about its future in electoral politics in the country, has frustrated its workers and leaders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Information gathered by Dawn reveal that PTI, which is looking for winning horses, has been in contact with some sitting lawmakers and influential political figures in the province to bring them to its folds before the next general elections.

However, entry of `turncoats` has disappointed PTI workers and leaders in the province as they fear that induction of `opportunists` would dent the popularity of the party among people, particularly the youths, who want a real and positive change in the country.

`We are not against the new entrants in the party, but it will damage the morale of workers if the known turncoats are given senior positions or tickets for the coming polls. If this happens, there will be no difference between PTI and other parties,` a senior PTI leader tells Dawn.

The PTI leaders suspect that politicians, who are known for changing loyalties, are lobbying to join PTI before next general elections to obtain party tickets. They say that the core committee has decided that PTI will be ideological, revolutionary and anti-status quo party and there will be no room for opportunists.

`Some elements are encouraging thesenotorious opportunists to join the PTI, says a party source.

According to the office-bearers, Provincial Minister for Irrigation Pervez Khattak and another former minister of Pakistan People`s Party from Nowshera district along with his friends are using different channels to ensure their entry in the PTL `There is frustration among the workers since some known turncoats have shown their intentions through media about joining the party,` he says, adding that PTI has not approached or invited these people to join the party.

Pervez Khattak denies that he has any contact with the PTI or any other party.

`Let the people discuss political discourse.

But neither I have shown such intentions nor any party has approached me,`he says.

The cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan`s PTI claims that it has enrolled over one million members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PTI activists are convinced that they will clean bold their rivals in the next elections.

A senior office-bearer of the party says that PIT will not enter into electoral alliance with any party except Jamaat-iIslami. He adds that they will field candidates on all seats in the province where voters` mode is very unpredictable.

Some political figures have recently joined PTI and many have been negotiating their deals. The Awami National Party MNA from Mardan, Khwaja Mohammad Khan Hoti, has inducted his son OmarFarooq in PTL Few days ago a farmer MPA of the ruling PPP from Nowshera, Qurban Ali Khan, joined PTL Political observers say that Qurban`s switch over to PTI can be a setback for PPP in the district.

Another MPA of PPP from Peshawar, a former nazim and a diehard jiyala from Peshawar are ready to join the party.

Sources in PTI say that two sitting MPAs from Swat, another MPA from Nowshera and a minister, who belongs to Kohat district, have approached the party. However, one MPA from Swat district when approached did not comment.

MPA Israrullah Khan Gandapur, the son of former chief minister Inayatullah Khan Gandapur, who got elected on PPP-S ticket from Dera Ismail Khan told Dawn that PTI office-bearers had approached him for joining the party.

Insiders say that allotment of tickets in the upcoming elections will depend upon educational qualification, credibility, financial status and social status of the candidates. However, the party`s office-bearers and workers will be given priority in the allotment of the tickets.

They say that some former officers of the intelligence agencies are facilitating the party in selection of candidates. `These retired officers are collecting data about political personalities with their previous records and provide it to PTI,` says one source. Political analysts say that PTFs future is depended on understanding between the PPP and ANP in the province.

Pakistan wins UNSC seat, joins India as non-permanent member

Chidanand Rajghatta
Oct 21, 2011

WASHINGTON: Pakistan narrowly won a hotly-contested seat to the UN Security Council on Friday joining India as a two-year non-permanent member on the body.

India, which is already serving as a non-permanent member for the 2011-2012 term, is believed to have voted for Pakistan, the two sides having made common cause on many issues at the UN except for Kashmir. Pakistan's term is for two years beginning January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2013, overlapping with India for one year.

Pakistan just about scraped through, securing 129 out of 193 votes in the United Nations General Assembly, exactly the two-third majority required to win the seat. Its principal opponent in the Asia-Pacific region, Kyrgyzstan, won just 55. This would be the seventh time Pakistan would serve on the Security Council, and the fourth time its term would overlap with India. India won its latest two-year term by securing a landslide 187 votes.

Guatemala and Morocco were the other members who joined the 15-member council, five of whom are permanent members with veto powers. The other ten are non-permanent members on two year rotations. There will be a second round of voting for two more seats, one in Africa between Togo and Mauritania and one in Eastern Europe between Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Hungary. Pakistan avoided a second round by just about managing to get the required 2/3rd majority in the first round itself.

Pakistan's UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon welcomed his country's election to the council and said he expected to work well with India's ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, next year. The two are personal friends and have been known to hang out together occasionally, once going to a US Open doubles match featuring the Indo-Pak combination of Aisam Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna.

"You have seen that the usual tendencies have not erupted between us and that is a good factor," Haroon told Reuters. "Perhaps both of us have been beneficial in starting dialogue between both the countries."

The last time India and Pakistan served together on the council was in 1977. With India and Pakistan on the council next year, seven of the 15 members will be nuclear powers.

Default Saudi Arabian crown prince dies at New York hospital

(CNN) -- Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud died in New York, officials said Saturday, raising succession questions in the key oil producer amid turmoil in the region.
No other details about his death were immediately available, but arrangements are under way to transport his body back to Saudi Arabia, officials said.
Crown Prince Sultan, thought to be in his 80s, was Saudi Arabia's minister of defense, and was one of the top figures in the Saudi kingdom. He's had various medical issues in recent years.
In 2009, he was in New York for surgery for an undisclosed illness and had also flown to Morocco for medical treatment over the years.
The country's royal court released a statement about the death Saturday.
"King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud mourns the death of his brother and his Crown Prince ... Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud," the statement said.
The statement also said he died "outside the kingdom following an illness," but did not release details on the ailment.
Reports in recent years have indicated that Crown Prince Sultan was battling cancer.
King Abdullah's half-brother was the desert kingdom's defense minister for decades, meeting regularly with visiting dignitaries.
He took a leading role in Saudi Arabia's involvement in the 1991 Gulf War against Iraq, heading a coalition of about half a million troops from more than 30 countries.
Of his many children, perhaps the best known internationally is Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, Saudi Arabia's former ambassador to the United States.
Prince Bandar served as ambassador from 1983 to 2005 and was friends with the family of President George W. Bush.

Begum Nusrat Bhutto passes away in Dubai

DUBAI:
Nusrat Bhutto, widow of former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and mother of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, passed away in Dubai on Sunday.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has announced public holiday on Monday to mourn the sad demise.

In Sindh, Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has also announced public holiday across the province.

All the educational institutions, offices of provincial and local governments will remain closed in Sindh on Monday.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has announced the suspension of all political activity in the wake of the former First Lady’s death.

Begum Nusrat Bhutto was 82 years old at the time of her death.

She outlived three of her children Murtaza, Benazir and Shahnawaz Bhutto. Of the immediate family, only Sanam Bhutto, daughter of Nusrat and ZA Bhutto remains.

Sources said that arrangements are being made to bring her body back to Karachi for a funeral scheduled for Tuesday.

Spokesperson to the President Farhatullah Babar said that her body will be taken for burial to Garhi Khuda Bux, the ancestral graveyard of the Bhutto family.

Bhutto had been recovering from a stroke while simultaneously battling Alzheimer’s disease.

She had functioned as a political hostess and accompanied ZA Bhutto on overseas visits.

In 1979, after the trial and execution of her husband, she succeeded him as leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party as chairman for life.

In 1982 she was given permission to leave the country by the military government of General Ziaul Haq for medical treatment in London at which point her daughter, Benazir Bhutto, became acting leader of the party and by 1984 Benazir became party chairman.

The death of Nusrat Bhutto sent a wave of sorrow among Pakistanis online, with many recalling anecdotes of the First Lady and her struggle for democracy amidst tragedy.
