Where there is a Will…there is a Way
By Laila Sohail

Every individual dreams to have invincible power, huge amounts of money and a beauty make over. Most waste their lives and themselves in their struggles to achieve this. They die wondering what they had done wrong, why their hard work had been in vain. Meet Mr. Zardari: a man with the same dream, but a difference between him and all these people……his dream came true.

Mr Zardari, who wed Miss Bhutto in an arranged marriage in 1987, became popular for his flamboyant tastes, and a big mustache. His wife became the prime minister, and he the lucky first man, but he must have failed to convey his desires to his wife, because the Ministry of Environment was the best he got: definitely an understatement for his ambitions. He saw his wife every day, in all her glory and he patiently stood behind her chair, overlooked as a part of the background. Those close to her looked at him condescendingly for his lack of mannerism and excess of callowness. He was seen as a stain on her reputation and a mistake that she had made.

But he was no fool, and definably not naďve. During his wife’s governments he was able to build his own little kingdom, by making a fortune for himself. He managed to transfer funds over a $100 million to foreign bank accounts, took payments from foreign companies who wanted favors from the government and acquired many registered and unregistered properties. He purchased, among other things a $4 million, 355-acre estate south of London. In 1994 and 1995, he used a Swiss bank account and an American Express card to buy jewelry worth $660,000 — including $246,000 at Cartier Inc. and Bulgari Corp. in Beverly Hills, Calif., in barely a month. Regardless to say, Mr Ten Percent had no reason to be disappointed, his wife’s tenures proved quite useful to him. His only regret must be that the prodigality did not last the full term of five years. He lived up to his name: Zar –dari { money manager}.

Despite his success, his high spirited nature caught him off guard sometimes. He became known for beating his wife repeatedly, and dragging the Prime Minister of Pakistan, even if she did happen to be his wife, out of a meeting by her hair was bound to be conspicuous. There were strong rumors that the couple was splitting up, but his trip to jail intervened. After his release on bail in 2004, Ms Bhutto was living in Dubai with her kids, and Mr Zardari moved to New York with his dogs.

It seems that the perception that women forgive easily holds true. Apparently his wife looked over their differences and left a piece of paper behind her that was going to change his life and the history of Pakistan forever. This “will” as we know it today became the blue print of his dreams becoming a reality. He was now the king {at least till his son became of age} and his power was invincible.

Mr Asif Zardari comes from a business family that owned a cinema, today he owns much more, thanks to his power hungry status seeking nature, He realized that those before him had been foolish in thinking that hard work realized dreams. This was their mistake. He knew that the only way to go was through corruption and manipulation. This master of deception knew how to choose the right allies. What is even more credible is that his success is unprecedented. The U S of A has often placed its pawns in power, but they have always either been men in uniform seeking legitimacy, or politicians seeking power. Never have they been jagir dar husbands of ex party leaders with corruption cases not only in their own country, but even in other countries such as Switzerland, cases that are still under trial.

We may now have a President, whose biggest credential in his own words, is that he spent 11 years in jail on criminal and corruption charges. Ask him about his political struggle and you will hear it from the horse’s own mouth. In 2003, a Swiss magistrate found Mr Zardari and Miss Bhutto guilty on money laundering charges, and ordered them to return $12 million to the Pakistani government. The case is currently being heard in the Court of Appeals there. In Britain, Zardari faces a civil case brought in connection with a country manor with hundreds of acres in southern England where he made extensive renovations, including the installation of an imitation of a local pub. Next time when his name is called out for any of these cases, will it be Mr Asif Zardari, or The President of Pakistan? Talk about International image!

Mr Zardari today has a lot to be proud of, he can afford to grin at the camera when the people in the country have no gas, electricity or food. He can smile and say the judges will be restored and the government will complete its five years term and bring prosperity. He can call himself Senator Zardari and not be questioned. Mr Zardari is indeed Mr Cent Percent. I give my congratulations to Mr Zardari, and pray for God’s blessings for Pakistan.
