Post Lawyers beat ASI in court premises

The NEWS

LAHORE, July 29: The Islampura police registered a case on Wednesday against five lawyers for allegedly thrashing an assistant subinspector (ASI) at Islampura’s sessions courts after the hearing of a kidnap case.

Islampura Station House Officer (SHO) Masood Gujjar told Dawn ASI Faqeer Muhammad from Nishtar Colony investigation police had appeared at the sessions judge’s court in connection with the kidnapping of Khadija Bibi.

Three days ago, the court sent Khadija to Darul Aman and accused Sahuddin Nazar to jail. On Wednesday, after the hearing, lawyers led by Rana Asif Raza, who was representing the accused, asked the ASI to accompany them to the bar room but the latter refused, the SHO said.

He said lawyers got annoyed and started slapping Faqeer. They also dragged him and kept him beating with kicks and fits for some time.

Some lawyers and visitors, however, managed to rescue the ASI from the lawyers. The ASI suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Mian Munshi Hospital for checkup.

A case under sections 148, 149, 186, 342, 353 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code was regis tered against lawyers Rana Asif Raza, Saeed Anwar, Malik Muhammad Hanif, Sajjad Afzal and Mehr Jehangir on the complaint of the ASI.

The SHO said raids would be conducted to track down the accused on Wednesday night. He said lawyers violated law in the sessions courts frequently.

According to Faqeer, he had no issue with the lawyers as the latter beat him after failing to win the case.

The cases of verbal and physical clashes involving lawyers are not new.

Earlier, some lawyers abused a Lahore’s civil judge on July 27.

Similarly, lawyers have been on strike against a woman deputy district officer (revenue) working at the Lahore Cantonment courts for her refusal to entertain them out of turn.

Inspector General Tariq Saleem Dogar said on Wednesday he expected from the higher judiciary to take suo motu note of lawyers’ highhandedness. He also ordered the police to investigate case on merit.

In a statement, the IG said lawyers’ leaders should take action against those who took law into their hands.

What do you think is the attitude of lawyers is ok or you disagree with them.
Kindly Submit your opinion

Regards.

It appears lawyers have gone in euphoria.I feel that first of all I.G should take action against that constable under Police Order, who was equipped and roaming and watching the scene silently. He must have come to the rescue of his colleague/officer.

Higher Judiciary will never take suo moto action for Police...since CJ has inferiority complex as he could not get his son Dr.Arsalan Iftikhar inducted into PSP...

Lawyers have gone beyond their limits they need to be treated the way they were treated outside Election Commission in 2007 when IG Islamabad Mr. Marwat Shah was present on the scene himself wearing a helmet... that day police thrashed the lawyers they way they deserved...

Dears,

If we are not aware of the actual situation, we dont have the right to share our views regarding the beating of the ASI. i think the lawyers r not asses to beat the man without any reason. so we cant say that lawyers are in euphoria or magalomania or schisophrenia etc etc. we must confirm the causes of the event b4 passing our judgment. by the way we are no party to the case to pass judgment... plz dont blame any one unless u authenticate the veracity of the action taken.. u say the lawyers are law on to themselves but u nver know the attitude of the ASIs also. go to some police station then u will know my dears... ''I'v been to police stations many times as a news reporter and their attitude is very much 'appreciable' not only towards me but to the ppl in general..

Kabhee zaroor visit karna Apna qareebi thana..

Does any reason, whatsoever, allow them to manhandle a police officer in uniform, that too, in the premises of a court, the upholder of the law...???
I thought over it for a while, but couldn't find any convincing reason for that... please share if you find something arguable...!!!

actually there are always some asses. police is the face of the state. when someone picks on it, he picks on the state. it is rebellion against the state. imagine, some frustrated lawyer beats you. how would you feel if someone else says that 'a lawyer isn't an ass to beat up anyone without any reason'.

violence is an unacceptable behaviour, be it on the part of a cop or a lawyer. there are no double standards.

Indeed, you are correct 2 say that no one is pious creature. Nonetheless, being a law student i must defend THEM. LAWYERS DOING IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY ARE NOT REPRESENTING LAWYER BODIES. However, as Dicey says Law is to prevail over everyone.
