It all completely depends on your commitment level. Few successful candidates have prepared for exams in 4 months. Although you have timeline available as you are 26. It would be better if you prepare well and then appear in 2018. Dont waste your attempt by experimenting. Hope this answers your question.

With announcement of result, role of NTS ends here or will it upload highest to lowest marks/merit list?

It's a long way to go till final recruitment. In my humble opinion, the process will be finished by January 2017. Anyhow, its better to move on and apply for other jobs as well.
