KHYBER PUKHTOON KHWA PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION,PESHAWAR SUBJECT:- COMPETITIVE EXAMINATION FOR THE POST OF PROVINCIAL MANAGEMENT SERVICE (BPS-17)-2008 English Literature - I Time allowed: 3 hours Max marks:100 Note: Attempt any five questions. All questions carry equal marks. 1. What is meant by Romantic Movement? Write an essay on the general characteristics of Romantic literature. 2. Discuss Nature with reference to the works of Wordsworth and Hardy by pointing out similarities and dissimilarities in their concept of Nature. 3. “Emotions recollected in tranquility”, illustrate this view of poetry with reference to some major poetic works of Wordsworth. 4. “The odes of Keats reflect his persistent endeavor for something beautiful and permanent in transient world”. Discuss and illustrate. 5. Write a note on Browning’s handling of Dramatic Monologue. 6. “Dickens seems in so many ways to be very English and indeed very Victorian”. Comment 7. “George Eliot’s sphere was the inner man; she exposed the internal clockwork”. Discuss The Mill on the Floss in the light of the above statement. |

Give a general estimate of Robert Frost as a literary artist. 3. “Hamlet is an intellectual caught in ethical and metaphysical uncertainties.” Discuss. 4. Write a detailed note on T. S. Eliot’s style of writing with references to The Waste Land. 5. Give a general estimate of Sons and Lovers. 6. “Her characters are at their best when advised by their hearts, and most of their errors come from their heads.” Discuss with reference to Pride and Prejudice. 7. Gulliver’s Travel has equal significance for children as well as grownups. Do you agree? Strengthen your viewpoint with arguments.
