This can be done via using the options.
Registry is simply not the domain to be played with even for an average computer user, it is reserved for the professionals who have complete information about the entries. It is critical as a wrong registry value can't even stop a program but may result in unstabling the operating system.
In one another tip by which IE or Firefox performs faster shouldn't be use because the registry entry which you recommended to set to null removes the security zone which enhance the security of system. It was released after years of search by microsoft so it's certainly not useless.

Default Change the Default Location for Program Files

Change the Default Location for Installing Programs
Hi QP Members,
now you can change the Default Location for Installing Programs on your windows....
XP uses the C:/Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed.
However, you can change the default installation drive and/or directory by using a Registry hack.
Run the Registry Editor and go to
Quote:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir.
By default, the value will be C:/Program Files.
Edit the value to any valid drive or folder; XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.
