iPad is a great device. It depends on what you use your laptop for. If you are a normal user i.e internet surfing, mails, pdf and office files (docx, xlsx, pptx etc.), multimedia (mp3s and movies) only than iPad can become a substitute for your laptop. And yeah it has iOS (Apple's proprietary OS) just like iPhone but with a bit more features.

I used an iPad 2 3 months ago..it was with me for around a week, and in that whole week I didnt use my PC at all, they only problem which you may come across is that you will face bit of difficulty while typing.. everything through touch is quite easy but i found typing bit of difficult other than that YES you can use it on for your laptop. Operating system is not that hard different company uses different OS, the one which i found hard is that of Blackberry, Android is quite easy and user friendly, interface of iPad is bit different but you wont find it hard to adjust with that.

i used Ainol Novo 7... it has quite good touch.. other brands from china are not that good with the touch technology. if you dont have any restriction on spending money then go for renowned brands like that of Apple etc

Buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 or Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (coming soon ). I like them more than iPad , they are more flexible than iPad which is rather limited to iTunes and AppStore (you cannot even bluetooth a song ). You can also use a usb drive with android tablet like Samsungs' and also android tablets have flash player installed in the web browser which is not found in iPad . Also android has built-in file browser which makes it more easy to manage office documents than iPad. You can expand Samsung's memory using memory card but iPad does not allow memory cards . However one important thing is iPad's AppStore offers enormous number of Apps (both free and paid), that is one thing you might give a consideration to . Also android is a more complex os to use than ios.

Note: Tablets are not complete substitutes of PC
