Default Quetta as Little London

I would like my friends to know about great Quetta.

Quetta
Quetta is the capital of the province Balochistan in Pakistan. It is located in a densely populated district in the northeast of the province. Quetta is situated in a river valley near the border with Afghanistan, with a road to Kandahar in the northwest.

Quetta has a population of about 650,000. The city is dominated by a Pashtun majority and a Balochi minority with an eclectic smattering of smaller groups. Pushto, Balochi, Persian (Hazaragi dialect), Brahui, Sindhi, Punjabi and Urdu languages are spoken in large parts of Quetta, giving the city a very multicultural feel.
Attractions

Jinnah Residency Quetta
Quetta is a major tourist attraction for tourists from abroad. It is advertised as a thrilling location, full of adventure and enjoyment. Some prominent bazaars of Quetta are located on the roads Shahrah-e-Iqbal (the Kandahari Bazaar) and Shahrah-e-Liaquat (the Liaquat and Suraj Gang Bazaars). Here, tourists can find colorful handcrafted art, particularly the Balochi mirror work embroidery, which is admired all over the world. For those interested in local cuisine, there are many sumptuous dishes to feast upon. The "Sajji" (leg of lamb) is said to be very good by locals.
Education
Quetta is home to the University of Balochistan,Bolan Medical College and many other educational institutions. The city is the site of a geophysical institute, the geological survey of Pakistan, Sandeman Library, and two government colleges affiliated with the University of Peshawar.
Culture

Quetta is also famous for its traditional colourful embroidery work
Quetta tribesmen are stereotyped as being the strong and silent types. They are, however, known for their friendliness and hospitality. Making visitors comfortable is an integral part of their local traditions. The main bazaar on Jinnah Road is full of Pathan traders wearing huge turbans, Baluchi hawkers with red embroidered caps, and full-skirted nomad women carrying bundles of imported cloth for sale.
Communication
Although Quetta is on the western edge of Pakistan, it is still connected with the country by a wide network of roads, railways and airways. Quetta is connected to Lahore by a 727 mile long railway line. Similarly it is also connected by railways with Peshawar (986 miles away) and Karachi, which is 536 miles away. Many Internet Service Providers and almost all major mobile phone companies are operating in Quetta.
Sports
People of Quetta are huge football fans. This city has produced more renowned footballers then any other part of Pakistan. Football is still widely played in Quetta. "Mali Bagh" is the famous foot ball ground. The famous footballers include Qayum Changezi, Taj Muhammad Senior and Taj Muhammad Junior.
Command and Staff College
Quetta is also famous for the prestigious military staff college, which was founded by the British. It has recently celebrated its hundredth anniversary.

Default Little London of 2007

Quetta now is not further London. Here are some facts about Quetta.
Populaton:

The populaton of Quetta is more than 25lacs, and this city was planned only for 50thousand people. There is no proper severage system in Quetta.Traffic problem is the biggest one, It is the 2nd most pulluted city of the world. It is 2nd in dearness after Islamabad in Pakistan.

Planning:

The Quetta city has witnessed no planning, the city government built the Jinnah road and install fancy light every year because the whole of Quetta is like London and there is no need of development works.

This is the only city, which has no sewerage system, the sewerage water flows on the roads, it should be registered in guineas book of world record.

Education:

The education system is very good in Quetta. Education is very easy in, 5 to 12 days You can get the degree of Metric to M.A , LL.B and in other high faculties, MBBS and BE is also included in it. For examination-solved set of Answers are available infort of the examination center only by 50 rupees, now your helper have spend more hundred rupees to supply the material via peon of the examination center.

Health Facilities:

BMC hospital is the biggest hospital in south Asia (Public Sector) . it has the capacity of 1700 beds, more than 6 operation theatres, machinery of million of rupees donated by Japan or purchased by the government, but the people give priority ( who has little bit money) to private hospital having not more than 10 beds. Why?

Law and Order Situation:

Rocket firing and bomb blasts is the daily routine, whole of the Police force of Quetta city is busy to cope with the motorcyclists, who are riding double. They see criminal in motorcycle, rickshaw or the pedestrians. While having the vehicle have the license of innocence.
Car, motorcycle, mobile snatching is abundant, in past people could not think about it, that it could be happened in Quetta.
Every kind of drugs(pure form) are available in Quetta, and smuggled from here to other cities of Pakistan especially to the Sindh and Punjab province.

Other members should post more facts about little London....

Respected Abdul Salam Khan has painted a very rosey picture of Quetta, probably to give a good impression of the city to the inhabitants of bigger cities as we all love to do.
Although it's my birth place and the place where ive spent my youth, i feel extremely bad at the condition of the city and do not want to make any effort to present a better picture of the place. But more than anyone else its own people are responsible for this situation. How and why is an extensive debate.
I would just like to say that what Mr. Zia Khan said is more or less correct, no matter how harsh it may sound. It is essential to highlight the problematic issues and acknowledge ourselves and the people at large and come to practical solutions.'God is in his heaven, all is well with the world' just doesn't work.

Well Mr A. Salam Khan has portrayed a rosey picture of Quetta, which is infact two decades old...

The current realities are a lot different and bitter...

The old Quetta had a single lane Zarghoon road one portion of it had trees on both sides... the trees gave complete shade to road and this road was known as Thandi Sarak... Those trees have been cut down now to make the road as double track....

Once all the roads of Quetta were washed early in the morning.... In the early 90s quetta was ranked as the most polluted city in the world due to presence of rikhshaws and diesel engine buses... right now i think it is 2nd...

Ethinically Quetta is divided into five main parts... One is Pashtun area on one side of Sariab railway crossing, second is the baloch are on the other side of sariab railways crossing... Central portion of city is a mix of pashtuns, punjabis and urdu speaking residents... then we have cantonment where military men and government servants reside... on the outskirts of cantonment is marriabad where hazara community resides who by the way are from shia faction...

Although in past one decade a lot of development in terms of roads is done but the traffic has surged four-fold... Traffic problems has also increased becuase cantonment has become a no go area now... Seven years back people used to throng towards hanna lake and urak passing through cantt area but that cantt and hanna gives a deserted look now...

Sewerage problem is also very much prevailing...

The planning is also weak... if we take alook at street structure of hudda and deba we can easily come to know what kind of porecarious conditions is the common man is living in this Mini London...

Biggest reason for increase in Quetta's population is that Quetta is only some what developed city in Balochistan, with proper schools and colleges...so most people come to Quetta so that their cvhildren can have quality education... Although Universities are available in Balcohistan but the acceptable standards of education are available till intermediate...beyond that the standards are somewhat inconsistent... Although efforts are being made in the higher education sector for the last seven years but the results are not that excouraging due to the dearth of qualified faculty... qualified faculty refuse to come to quetta due to ongoing ethnic and security issue prevailing in the province...

I think this would be enough for a while to ponder upon... i will come up with more shortly.
Regards.
