Philosophy of colours
Psychologists think that people associate colours with emotions such as green with rest, red with anger and black with depression. Whether they are right or not, English is full of COLOUR symbolism.
People with a colourful past, have an interesting personal history. Equally, colourless people or lives are boring. A man of many colours is a man who has many different abilities or images. If he has been shown to be a liar or a hypocrite, we say that he has been shown in his true colours. In his annoyance at being exposed, he may use colourful language and swear at someone. A green horse or person is youthful and inexperienced, just like the green branch of a tree is young and untried by storms. Emotions such as envy and jealousy are green too. Shakespeare wrote about the green monster of jealousy in his play Othello and today we still speak of the little green monster or of being green with envy, although why it should be a green monster instead of a blue or brown one is not clear. If you believe that the grass is greener on the other side, you want something that's just out of your reach, just like cattle which always want to eat in the field next to where they are left by the farmer. Cowardly people are said to have a yellow streak. In the past, men who refused to fight in wars were given the white feather from a chicken, a bird which symbolized cowardice. White with pain and pale with fear are phrases which reflect the draining of blood from the surface of the body when we are injured or afraid, whereas red with anger indicates the rush of blood to the face associated with anger. A young person is described as being in the first flush of youth which refers to the glowing skin which traditionally accompanies good health. Similarly, being in the pink also refers to glowing skin. Seeing the world through rose tinted spectacles means that you are looking at things in a false light which makes them seem more attractive than they actually are. The term scarlet woman, became fashionable a hundred years ago when respectable ladies wore subdued colour such as grey and brown and women of ill repute wore bright reds, greens and blues. It is still used today, although mostly in a tongue in cheek manner. Prostitution districts are called red light districts because of the lighted lamps the girls used to put in their windows to show they were in business. Maroon is not just a deep red colour, being marooned means being abandoned. A rosy future is a good future, but if the future is looking black, the future is not looking good. Giving someone a dark look or a black look is frowning or scowling at someone. If you are in a bad mood, you are in a black mood. If you are black and blue you have fallen over and are full of bruises. Extreme cold can result in frost bite where the skin turns white with blotches of blue, so we talk of being blue with cold Just being blue or having the blues is feeling depressed. In America, the boys in blue are all in the navy wearing natty blue uniforms. When two full moons occur within 28 days we call that period a blue moon. Something which happens once in a blue moon therefore, happens very seldom. Describing people we say that a chatterbox talks up a blue streak and a brown noser is a derogatory term used for people who are sycophantic. Good or unique opportunities are called golden opportunities, gold being a precious metal. Beer is referred to by the Hash House Harriers club as the golden fluid or the golden nectar, gold symbolizing its preciousness. Every cloud has a silver lining means that each disaster or problem brings some good as well, such as staying at home with a bad cold also means that you get to watch daytime films on television. |
