What is Shab-e-Qadr?

Shab-e-Qadr means 'the night of power' or 'the night of respect'; the most blessed of all the nights of the year according to Islam. In the Koran and Hadith it is referred to as Lailatu'l-Qadr. In this night, five verses of Al-Alaq, the first surah (chapter) of the Quran was revealed. About Shab-e-Qadr the Quran says: it is the night in which the Quran was revealed; it is better than a thousand months; during this night the angles including Jibra'il descended with the permission of their Lord.

When is it observed?

The precise date of Shab-e-Qadr is unknown except that, according to Quran, it falls in Ramzan. According to the prophetic tradition it is an odd-numbered night among the last seven or 10 days of the month, that is, the 21st, 23rd, or 25th, or any of the 25th, 27th or 29th night of Ramzan. However, Muslim scholars believe that Shab-e-Qadr is the 27th night of Ramzan. This night is a great mercy of Allah to the Muslims, for by praying in this single night they can get the reward of prayer done in more than thousand months.

What is the significance of Shab-e-Qadr?

It is believed that if a believer prays throughout this night all his past sins are forgiven. At the time of Isha' prayer, people assemble at mosques, with many staying till midnight to pray. Women pray at home.

Prayers and invocations to Allah the Almighty for seeking forgiveness during Laila-tul-Qadr, the night of the revelation of the Quran, will be full throttle at dusk, this being the night of the 27th of Ramadan.

The faithful will spend the entire night worshipping Allah the Almighty to seek mercy.

A large number of people throughout the Muslim world remain busy in offering special prayers and recite the Holy Quran with renewed verve and zest particularly in the last odd or Taak nights of Ramadan.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) was ordained to search for this night in the last odd nights of the holy month. However, some people mistakenly believe the holy night is on 27th.

Women also pray to the Allah Almighty and seek His forgiveness.

They remain busy in Zikr and offer Nawafil and special prayers.

The Holy Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) has said that this holy night is better than a thousand ordinary nights and every Muslim should spend the night in the worship of Allah the Almighty to seek his mercy.

Prayers for the progress and prosperity of the country will also offered during the night.

The Virtues of this Glorious Night are very great indeed for any believer who prays, supplicates and remembers Allah (T) much with sincerity and have hope in His reward. The Muslims who are all commissioned to tenaciously follow the Sunnah of the Messenger (S) must not raise any banner for this night. They must, however, race with one another to worship Allah (T) with Eemaan and hoping for His reward.

The Virtues of the Night of Decrees

1. It is enough to mention as a virtue that the night of Qadr (decrees) is better than a thousand months.

Allah (T) said, which means:

Indeed We revealed it on the Night of Qadr (Decrees). And what will convey unto you what the Night of Qadr (decrees) is? The Night of Qadr (decrees) is better than a thousand months. The angels and spirit descend therein by the permission of their Lord with all decrees. (The Night) is Peace until the Dawn. [Al-Qadr 99]

2. It is also the Night when all ordainments for the year are decreed. Allah (T) said, which means:

By the manifest Book (the Quraan) that makes thing clear. We sent it (this Quraan) down on a Blessed Night (i.e. the Night of Qadr) in the month of Ramadaan. Verily We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torments will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of Wordship]. Therein (that night) is decreed every matter (amran) of ordainment [The Smoke 44:2-5]

Its time

It is established in the Sunnah that knowledge of this glorious night was taken away from this Ummah due to quarreling between two Sahabas.

Ubaadah ibn Saamit said: "The Prophet (S) came out with (information about) the night of Qadr (Decrees); two men from among the Muslim were quarreling and he said: "Verily I came out to inform you about the night of Qadr but such and such person were quarrelling so it was raised. and maybe this is good for you. However, search for it in the ninth, the seventh, and the fifth." [Bukhaaree]

The most authentic report on this issue is that Lailatul Qadr (the Night of Decrees) should be sought during the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan. Aa'ishah relates that the Messenger (S) of Allah (T) used to perform I'atikaaf during the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan and he (S) said: "Seek for the night of Qadr (decrees) during the odd (nights) from the last ten (nights) of Ramadaan." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

If there is weakness or inability to search in the odd nights of the last ten nights, then the Muslim should try not to miss out the odd nights of the last seven nights as is established in the following Hadeeth.

Ibn'Umar narrates that the Messenger (S) of Allah (T) said: "Seek it in the last ten Nights. However, if one of you becomes weak or is not able to, then let him not be subdued by the last seven nights." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]

There are different opinions relative to what night is the Night of Qadr (decrees) but the best thing for the Muslim who is sincere in seeking it, is to search for it during the odd nights of the last ten nights. If he is not able to or weak, then he should at least seek it on the 25th, 27th and 29th night. And Allah knows best.

How should the Muslim establish this Night?

Indeed this Night, because of its sacredness, should be something that the sincere Muslim strives to seek after; by establishing its odd nights with Eemaan (i.e. performing prayer) and a desire to accrue for himself its blessing. If he achieves this, then all his previous sins will be forgiven as is established in the following Hadeeth. The Messenger (S) said: "Whoever prays the Night of Qadr (Decrees) with Eemaan (faith) and hoping for its reward, Allah will forgive him all his previous sins." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]
During this night also it is recommended to make dua'a as much one possibly can. It is narrated from Aa'isha (R) that she said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allaah, if I know what night is the Night of Qadr what should I say?." He said: "Say: O Allaah you are pardoning and you love to pardon so pardon me. " [Ahmad,Ibn Majah,Tirmidhee]

Now that you are aware of the night of the Qadr, establish the last ten nights and enliven it with Ibaadah and abstain from your women and encourage your family to do the same and do obedience during it as much as you are able to.

Aa'isha (R) said: "When the last ten days of Ramadaan arrived the Messenger (S) used to abstain (from contact a with his wives) and he would establish the nights. He would awaken (his family) to do the same also." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]
And she(R) also said: "The Messenger of Allaah (S) used to strive in Ramadaan more than he did in any other month." [Muslim]

The Signs of the Night of Qadr.

The Messenger of Allaah (S) described the morning of the night of Qadr so that the muslims can know which night it is.

Ubayy (R) said : "On the morning of the night of Qadr the sun would rise without any beams; (it is like) a wash basin until it raises." [Muslim]

Abu Hurairah (R) said : "We mentioned the night of Qadr to the Messenger of Allaah (S) and he said: "Which of you remembers when the moon rises and it is like half a bowl." [Muslim]

Ibn Abbaas (R) said that the Messenger of Allaah (S) said : "The night of Qadr is a night of generosity and happiness, it is not hot and neither is it cold. The sun comes up in its morning weak, reddish." [Tabaranee, Ibn Khuzaimah and Bazzaar]


Laylatul-Qadr is the most blessed night. A person who misses it has indeed missed a great amount of good. If a believing person is zealous to obey his Lord and increase the good deeds in his record, he should strive to encounter this night and to pass it in worship and obedience. If this is facilitated for him, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.

Praying Qiyaam

It is recommended to make a long Qiyaam prayer during the nights on which Laylat -ul -Qadr could fall. This is indicated in many Ahaadeeths, such as the following:

Abu Dharr(radiyallaahu`anhu) relates: "We fasted with Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu`alaihiwasallam) in Ramadhaan. He did not lead us (in qiyaam) at all until there were seven (nights of Ramadhaan) left. Then he stood with us (that night - in prayer) until one third of the night had passed. He did not pray with us on the sixth. On the fifth night, he prayed with us until half of the night had passed. So we said, 'Allah's Messenger! Wouldn't you pray with us the whole night?' He replied: 'Whoever stands in prayer with the Imaam until he (the Imaam) concludes the prayer, it is recorded for him that he prayed the whole night.'…" [Recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi (who authenticated it), an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, at-Tahawi (in Sharhu Ma`an il-Athar, Ibn Nasr, al-Faryabi, and al-Baihaqee. Their isnaad is authentic.]

Point of benefit: Abu Dawud mentioned: "I heard Ahmad being asked, 'Do you like for a man to pray with the people or by himself during Ramadan?' He replied, 'Pray with the people' I also heard him say, 'I would prefer for one to pray (qiyaam) with the Imaam and to pray Witr with him as well, for the Prophet (sallallaahu`alaihiwasallam) said: "When a man prays with the Imaam until he concludes, it is recorded that he prayed the rest of that night."[Masaa'il]]

Abu Hurairah (radiyallaahu`anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah Muhammad (sallallaahu`alaihiwasallam) said: "Whoever stands (in qiyaam) in Laylatul-Qadr [and it is facilitated for him] out of faith and expectation (of Allah's reward), will have all of his previous sins forgiven."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim; the addition "and it is facilitated for him" is recorded by Ahmad from the report of `Ubaadah Bin as-Samit; it means that he is permitted to be among the sincere worshippers during that blessed night.]

Making Supplications

It is also recommended to make extensive supplication on this night. 'Aa'ishah (radiallaahu'anha) reported that she asked Allah's Messenger Muhammad (sallallaahu` alaihiwasallam), "O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylat ul-Qadr, what should I say during it?" And he instructed her to say: "Allahumma innaka `afuwwun tuh.ibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee - O Allah! You are forgiving, and you love forgiveness. So forgive me." [Recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmidhi. Verified to be authentic by Al-Albaanee]

Abandoning Worldly Pleasures for the Sake of Worship

It is further recommended to spend more time in worship during the nights on which Laylatul-Qadr is likely to be. This calls for abandoning many worldly pleasures in order to secure the time and thoughts solely for worshipping Allah. `Aa'ishah Bint Abu Bakr (radiallaahu'anha) reported: "When the (last) ten started, the Prophet Muhammad
(sallallaahu`alaihiwasallam) would tighten his Izaar (i.e. he stayed away from his wives in order to have more time for worship), spend the whole night awake (in prayer), and wake up his family." [Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim]

And she said: "Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu`alaihiwasallam) used to exert more (in worship) on the last ten than on other nights." [Muslim]


Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) said:

“Whosoever performs the night prayer on the night of Al-Qadr with Eemaan (firm belief) and seeking reward will have all his past sins forgiven.”

This hadeeth is evidence for the virtue of the night of Al-Qadr as well as performing qiyaam during it. And it indicates that it is a grand night, which Allaah has honored and made better than a thousand months in regards to its blessing and the blessings found in the righteous deeds that are performed in it. Thus it is better than the worship of a thousand months and that is equivalent to eighty-three years and four months. Due to this, whoever performs qiyaam (night prayer) with true faith and while seeking reward in it, will be forgiven his past sins. There were certain verses verses concerning this virtue:

Allaah says: "We sent it (the Qur'aan) down on a blessed night. Verily We are Ever-Warning. Therein (on that night) is decreed every matter of ordainment."


Therefore, it is a “blessed night” meaning it possesses much good and blessing due to its merit and the great reward that awaits the one who does good deeds in it. Among its blessings, is that Allaah revealed the Qur’aan in it. Allaah says: "Verily, We have sent it (the Qur'aan) down in the night of Al-Qadr. And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr is? The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (Jibreel) by their Lord's permission with all decrees. (All that night) there is peace, until the appearance of dawn."

Ibn Katheer (ra) said concerning Allaah’s saying: “Therein descend the angels and the Rooh”: “This means that the descending of the angels increases during this night due to the vast amount of its blessings. And the angels descend along with the descent of blessing and mercy, just as they descend during the time when the Qur’aan is recited and encompass the gatherings in which Allaah is remembered and spread their wings for the true seeker of knowledge, showing respect for him.”

This night occurs only in Ramadaan, since Allaah revealed the Qur’aan in it. He informs us that its revelation occurred during the month of Ramadaan in His saying: "Verily, We have sent it (the Qur'aan) down in the night of Al-Qadr."

And His saying: "The month of Ramadaan in which was revealed the Qur'aan" This means that its revelation from Allaah to His Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) began in it.

Allaah’s statement: “The night of Al-Qadr” is either an indicative of the honor and station of that night, as it is said: "Such and such person has great Qadr". The conjunction of "the night" to Al-Qadr is the joining of a descriptive feature to it, thus making it mean "An honorable night". The word “Al-Qadr” may also be in reference to the ordainment and disposal of affairs. Thus, its being joined to the word "the night" would be in order to denote a place or time to it. So it would mean "the night in which all that will occur in the following year will be decreed." This is similar to Allaah's saying: "Therein (on that night) is decreed every matter of ordainment."

Qataadah said of this: "Therein is decreed every matter of the (upcoming) year" and Ibn Al-Qayyim said that this is the correct opinion.

What seems most correct is that there is nothing that restricts the possibility of these two understandings and Allaah knows best.

His statement: “with Eemaan” means with firm conviction in what Allaah has prepared for those who stand in prayer during this magnificent night. And “seeking reward” means looking for reward and the attainment of recompense.

Thus, this is a grand night, which Allaah has chosen for beginning the revelation of the Qur’aan. So the Muslim must acknowledge its weight in worth, by guarding it and spending it in worship whilst having firm conviction and seeking the reward of Allaah, in order that Allaah may forgive all of his previous sins. This is why the Prophet (PBUH) warned us about being heedless of this night and being neglectful of spending it in worship, for the Muslim would be prevented from its good.

Abu Hurairah(RA) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (PBUH) said: "Ramadaan has come to you -- a blessed month. Allaah has made it obligatory upon you to fast in it. During this month, the gates of heaven are open, the gates of the Hellfire are closed and the evil devils are chained. To Allaah belongs a night in it, which is better than a thousand months. Whosoever is prevented from its good, then he has been prevented."

The Muslim should supplicate much on the nights in which the night of Al-Qadr is sought. And he should supplicate with that which the Prophet (PBUH) instructed ‘Aa’ishah RAAwith, when she asked him: “What if I know on which night the night of Al-Qadr occurs, what should I say?” So he (PBUH) said: “Say: O Allaah, indeed you are All-Pardoning. You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”

Ibn Katheer (ra) said: “It is recommended to supplicate a lot at all times and (to supplicate) more than that during the month of Ramadaan, its last ten days and its odd days. And it is highly recommended to increase ones invoking with this supplication: ‘O Allaah, indeed you are All-Pardoning. You love forgiveness, so forgive me.’”

Surah No. 97, Al Qadr, Ayats No. 1 to 5




oوَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ o إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِالْقَدْرِ

o لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِخَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ

oتَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَابِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ

o سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّى مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ







Translation :

We have indeed revealed this (Quran) in the Night of Power (Night of Al Qadr ): And what will make you know what the Night of Power (Night of Qadr) is ? The Night of Power is better than a thousand Months. Therein the angels and the Spirit (Jibraeel) come down on the earth by Allah's permission, with all decrees : (All that Night) there is Peace until the appearance of dawn.




Surah No. 44, Ad Dukhan, Ayats No. 2 to 4

o وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ

o إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ

o فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ


Translation :

By this Book, which makes things clear, We sent it down (this Quran) during a blessed night (in the night of Qadr): In fact ! We wish to warn (the mankind). In this night all affair of wisdom are made crear .

Comments :

This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights. During this night, the angels and the spirit [Jibraeel (as)] descends in the proximity of the Earth. This night is full of reward and blessing and is equivalent to a thousand months of worship. Anyone who takes part in Laylatul Qadr will have worshipped an equivalent to eighty three years and four months. In this night the Holy Quran was sent down from LOH-E-MEHFOOZ (the Preserved Tablet) to the earth.

There is no history in the Quran as to when the specific date is ? HOWEVER there are following Ahadis which indicates the probable days :

Volume 3, Book 32, Number 234:
Narrated 'Aisha:

Allah's Apostle said, "Search the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan."

Volume 3, Book 32, Number 238:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The Prophet said, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan ,'


The Messenger of Allah (saws) told us to search for Shab-e-Qadr in the odd numbered nights, in the last ten days of Ramzan. So, the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th night of Ramadan could be Shab-e-Qadr.
Hazrat Aisha (ra) stated that Prophet Mohammad (saws) said, "Look for Lailat-ul-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadhan." (Bukhari)

Hazrat Aisha (ra) stated that the Prophet Mohammad (saws) used to do Ibadat in the last Ashra (ten days) of Ramadan (Ramzan)," (Muslim)

If a person wants to obey his Lord, increase the good deeds in his record and have all past sins forgiven, they should take part in Laylatul Qadr.

“Whoever stays up (in prayer and remembrance of Allah) on the Night of Qadr fully believing (in Allah’s promise of reward for that night) and hoping to seek reward (from Allah alone and not from people), he shall be forgiven for his past sins.” (Sahih Hadith Bukhari / Muslim)


How to worship in this Night :

Here are a few suggestions to worship in Laylatul Qadr :
One must prepared himself mentally that he will be worshipping in Laylatul Qadr.

While performing Nafil salats take regular breaks to avoid getting over-exhausted.

Try switching between different forms of worship.

Recitation of the Qur'an must be continued.

Zikr will be another form of worship to be performed.

Social gatherings and meaningless talk shold be avoided.

May Allah help us to purify our hearts, strengthen our faith and help us to worship in all the required nights of the last Ashra of the holy month.
