Importance Of Rational & Logical Dialogue In Islam

Rational & Logical Dialogue Between Prophet Muhammad(SAWW) And Christian Priests

In 9 Hijri, The Christians of Najran came to the Holy Prophet(SAWW) for a dialogue over the Issue Of Essa(a.s)'s status as a son of God or as a Prophet,

Holy Prophet(SAWW) asked them, Why you People consider Essa(a.s) son of God?

Christian Priest replied:
Because Jesus(Essa) was born without Father.

Prophet(SAWW) said: According to your logic Adam(a.s) is more deserving to be son of God ,because he was born without father & Mother. But you don't consider Adam(a.s) son of God.

The Christian Priests stunned:0 at the logical & rational reply of Prophet(saww).

Following verse of Surrah-e-Ale-Imran 3rd Surrah was revealed at that time.

[3:59] Surely the likeness of Isa is with Allah as the likeness of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him, Be, and he was.

Holy Prophet(SAWW) replied to Christians in tolerant & rational way.
This event depicts the importance of logical & rational dialogue in Islam.

When Christian Priests failed in "Mubahesa- Dialogue"
As they did not listen to reason, then Holy Prophet(SAWW) invited them for "Mubahila- Spiritual Contest".

This verse revealed at that time,

[3:61] But whoever disputes with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge, then say: Come let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and our near people and your near people, then let us be earnest in prayer, and pray for the curse of Allah on the liars.

The Christians agreed to this contest.

Early next morning, the 24th of the month of Dhilhijjah,
A large number of companions(r.a) assembled in the masjid, making themselves available for the selection. On the opposite side of the field, selected for the contest, the Christians, with their selected men, women and children appeared on the scene.

At the appointed hour, a huge crowd, standing in wait, saw the
Holy Prophet(SAWW) coming in, Husayn in his arms, Hasan holding his index finger, walking beside him, Bibi Fatimah Zahra, close to his heels and Ali just behind her-as his sons, women, and selves.

The chief monk looked up and down at the faces of the Pure Five (Panjatan Pak), from whom emanated a radiant and brilliant glow; and this sight filled him with awe and anguish. He cried out aloud:

"By Jesus! I see the faces that if they turn upward to the heavens and pray, the mountains shall move. Believers in Jesus of Nazareth, I tell you the truth. Should you fail to come to some agreement with Muhammad(SAWW), he, along with the godly souls with him, shall wipe out your existence for ever, should they invoke the curse of God on you."

The Christians saw the wisdom of their chief and readily agreed to arrive at a settlement. As there is no compulsion in religion (Baqarah 256), the Holy Prophet gave them complete freedom to practise their faith. He also agreed to protect their lives and possessions; and for this service the Christians consented to pay a nominal fee (Jizya). Many Christians also accepted Islam. It was an extraordinary manifestation of the glory of Islam; therefore, the followers of Muhammad(SAWW) celebrate this unique blessings of Allah as a "thanksgiving" occasion of great joy and comfort.

Allama Iqbal Preferred Wisdom Over Wealth

Allama Dr. Muhammad Iqbal experienced progressive & constructive development in his Poetry & thought with the passage of time.As Knowledge increases wonder deepens.
One can easily realize the difference between Iqbal's Juvenile poetry & Iqbal's Poetry before his death."Asrar-O-Ramooz" is Iqbal's one of the finest poetry before his death which reveals Iqbal's wonder.

Asar-o-Ramooz:

He said,

Haidri Faqar hai na Daulat-e-Usmani hai.
Tum ko Aslaaf se kya nisbat-e-Rohani hai.

Meaning:
"O Muslims! neither you possess the wisdom(Faqar) of Ali nor the wealth of Usman - then what kind of metaphysical relations you claim with your ancestors."

He advised the Muslims,

Mera tareeq ameeri nahin faqeeri he.
Khudi na beich, ghareebi mein naam peida kar.

Meaning:
" I follow the path of wisdom(faqeeri) not wealth , don't sell Your KHUDI(conscience) , Acquire fame & excellence through poverty."

This is a dialogue of angels over current affairs of human beings.
First angel is optimist over the achievements of human beings, whereas second angel is pessimist.
Third Angel logically analyses the whole scenario.

Cost of Private Dialogue with Prophet(saww)& attitude of well off People.

[58:12] "O you who believe! When you consult the Messenger in private, spend something in charity before your private consultation. That will be best for you, and most conducive to purity (of conduct). But if you find not , Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Source - Tafsir Ibne Abbas
Altafsir.com - The Tafsirs -

"When they stopped speaking with the Prophet (pbuh) because of the required almsgiving involved, Allah reproached them for doing so, saying: (Fear ye) are you miserly, O well off people, (to offer alms before your conference) to offer alms to the poor before speaking with the Prophet (pbuh)? (Then, when ye do it not) when you do not give alms (and Allah hath forgiven you) the question of giving alms, (establish worship) perform the five daily prayers (and pay the poor-due) from your wealth (and obey Allah) in that which He commands you (and His messenger) in that which he commands you. (And Allah is Aware of what ye do) whether it is good or evil. But no one gave alms for speaking with the Prophet (pbuh) except 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib who gave to alms a golden piece which he sold for ten silver pieces, and then asked the Prophet (pbuh) a question of ten words."

In the presence of the Holy Prophet all instructions or consultations were open and free, but there were many men among his companions who could only be satisfied by a private interview in order to display their false dignity, or out of selfishness wanted to monopolise his time, or were not willing to disclose their secrets to their brethren. In order to discourage such weaknesses it was therefore decided that they should spend something in charity for the good of their poorer brothers before availing the facility of private consultation. And For those who cannot afford cost of Consultation with Prophet, Allah said, Allah is forgiving & merciful!

The word sadqah makes it clear that neither the Holy Prophet nor the Ahl ul Bayt could be benefited as it is forbidden to them.

[58:13] Do you fear that you will not (be able to) give in charity before your consultation? So when you did not do it and Allah has turned to you (mercifully), then keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and obey Allah and His Messenger; and Allah is Aware of what you do."

After this incident, Verse 12 of 58th surrah was abrogated & replaced by verse 13 of 58th surrah.Hence alms giving for private consultation was abolished.
Hazrat Ali said "I am the only one who acted upon the verse 58:12 & no one after me can act upon this verse till the day of Judgment as it was replaced by 58:13."
This depicts the FAQAR of Ali (KAW).

A Reply full of Wisdom,Rationality & Logic to an Irrational Question

Once an Atheist came to Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq & asked a question.

Atheist asked,:
Is your Allah omnipotent?

Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq replied,
Yes, My Allah is omnipotent.

Atheist asked,
Can your Allah place whole world in an egg, without increasing the size of Egg & without decreasing the size of world?:thinking (This question seems irrational )

Imam Jafar-Al-Sadiq smiled & replied,

O Atheist! see upward ,downward then left & right ,O Atheist! see whole world! God has placed whole world in your egg shaped eye & the size of egg shaped eye neither increased nor decreased. My Allah is omnipotent.

The Atheist stunned:blink::0 at the logical & rational reply of Imam Jafar-Al-Sadiq.

Note:
Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq is the Great Grandson of Prophet Muhammad(SAWW) .He is the founder of Fiqh-e-Jafaria.Imam Abu Hanifa, founder of Fiqh-e-Hanafia, was the student of Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq. Jabir Bin Hayan ,Father of Chemistry, was also the student of Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq.

our teacher of Islamic Psychology enforces us not to argue over what Quran says. He says do not ask the question why. When you are told to perform some thing by God, it is the requirement of learning and respect that do not misconduct by asking any question. I have different opinion. I believes that a Muslim can think of even the very revelation of Quran and Muslim should justify any divine order according to its sense. Can you please provide me any Verse from Holy Quran which allows one to think over logic.
