Playing Quran in the background

Hey All !

Usually when someone plays Quran and is not attentive to it people say to either listen to it or close it cuz it's like dis-respecting Quran having it in the background while we are busy doing some stuff.

Looking at it from a different perspective, i believe it should be ok. My reasons go as follows:

1. You know how they say that everything and everyone releases positive and negative energy and the one that's more in proportion takes control. Like if in a place you have all sort of activities like clubbing and blah blah, people in that place tend to be more attracted towards them. Likewise, in a religious place people tend to be more worshiping. So, even if one is not attentive to Quran isn't it still ok cuz at least some divinity is being spread in the surrounding? In other words, something positive that the person is surrounded by and something positive that's happening to him/her.

2. You know how they say that music affects your mind functioning and it can control you in fact THEY (i hope you get what i mean by "they" :) ) control us through music and television and blah blah. So even when we have a song played that we aren't attentive to, it still affects us and most of us even get tuned with it. So, even if one is not attentive to Quran isn't it still ok cuz at least we don't get "tuned" or controlled by something such as music? In other words, something positive is being stored in our unconscious part of the mind instead of negative that is specifically meant in today's era to control us. Like we also have those diffuse images that we don't notice but they do affect us cuz our unconsciousness recognizes them.

3. Since the food of soul is the word of God (the place from where it has come), that is only what can keep it healthy and satisfied. So, even if one is not attentive to Quran isn't it still ok cuz at least the soul is getting what it needs. In other words, our ears may not be attentive but I believe our soul is.

So, what do you guys say?

Well I think that it must not be so, it should be turned off. Music is actually music while Quran is a Holy Book. It enjoys great sanctity and there are certain etiquettes for reciting it or even listening to it, performing ablution is one of them. So the Holy Quran must be given the due respect it deserves.

Apart from the energy mantra, I think it is totally okay to be tuned into recitation of Holy verses passively since one makes use of only one sense i.e. sense of hearing while doing so and can actively involve oneself in other activities.

In the Holy Qur'an, Allah Almighty says:

7:204 When the Qur'an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy.

Please do not use the word 'play'.

It is unethical to not to pay any attention to the speaker during a conversation in the normal life.

ALLAH speaks to us through QURAN.

Apart from the above reason there a lot of other grounds too because of which we should not use Quranic verses as ring tones.

If Quranic verses are saved in a mobile phone and are played with the intention to listen to it attentively during any part of the day then its ok.

BUT if my memory is not deceiving me then a couple of years back i heard an aalim on aalim online that there is a fatwa that Quranic verses should not be played on the instruments which are used for playing music etc.par fatwa to loud speaker k khilaf bhi tha.

Quran before anything is message from GOD to human beings. Its first and foremost purpose is to help us lead a pious life based on righteousness.Earning sawab or naiki comes second when the basic demand of the quran is met.
Please do not use the word 'play'.
Could you elaborate, please?

@ Rest

I agree with all of you. And mjkhan, i'm also aware that it's unethical to not pay attention to the conversation. This point has occurred to me several times, in fact. And no doubt, listening attentively gives more peace and a rich spiritual experience. However, what i said in my previous post is actually based upon a scenario which I believe I should have mentioned earlier. Anyhow.........

Suppose there's this person who has always been involved in activities that Islam does not permit. But one day, he has an urge and an intense feeling to be in mosque, to be closer to God, to pray, to cry, to repent etc etc. And he enters the mosque while still in an inappropriate condition (you could say half drunk or inappropriate clothes or whatever). What would you do? Kick him out of the mosque instantly? Or let him cry and talk to God, sit next to him and say a few humble words, then take him out and help him? Well, I would do the latter.

Similarly, if there's this young person involved in all sort of "cool" activities. But at some point he has an intense feeling to discover (or re-discover) the religion. So instead of playing music, he starts playing Quran. Even if he's not attentive the entire time, there could be instances where a word or two would catch his attention and make him listen attentively or go more deeply in the ayah. Apart from the reasons already mentioned, isn't it still good? At least, he's not listening music. At least, he is not doing something that has been termed haram. At least, he's not doing those "cool" activities anymore. And who knows, if through this practice he would become more into religion and be someone whom we would call "a true ambassador of Islam" and later be even more than just attentive while listening to Quran. And I believe we can not ignore the way our mind functions because there is always this unconscious part that is active and we are unaware of it, of what it is storing.

Speaking about personal experience, during preparation of my final A'Level exams I used to play Surah Al-Baqarah while studying along with its english translation. Though I wasn't attentive the entire time, yet there were instances where a few words would catch my attention and then I used to stop doing what ever i was and follow it. Then move back to work. Believe me, because of this playing habit the afore-mentioned surah became my favorite. I felt it had answers to almost all social and other problems that we face. And now, when at times I play it in the morning the initial part of the surah always seems familiar, the words. And I enjoy it even more. I love it.

I'm not a prefect Muslim, but trying to get on the path I have once lived (this doesn't mean i was or i am involved in "cool" activities :excl:). But now, with better understanding I feel more firm in what I do and what I believe. Because it is something that I have done and still do, and because I wonder about other people in situations like mentioned above I felt I should discuss here cuz in Islam there is always room for possibilities I believe. As long as something brings someone closer to Allah, i believe there could be a room for it as well. Couldn't there be?

Please take me that way I intent. :)

mjkhan Saturday, December 31, 2011 05:34 AM

I think i understand your intent. And i knew it even when i made the previous post.Personally speaking, had i been in the place of that guy involved in chool activities i would have installed quranic tunes in my mobile phone to bring myself closer to GOD cause when you are already away from your GOD or stuck deep down in the sins then it is better to try whatever you can to get out of that situation rather than worrying about other strict religious obligations,be it with the help of quranic ringtone to keep me in touch with the right. This is because we all know that GOD is merciful and even if we ask for forgiveness at a later stage after being out of the situation in which we were previously,GOD will certainly forgive us.

But there can be situations otherwise to what you came up with that guy involved in cool activities.there can be hundreds of them.

For instance my friend was sitting beside me who recently got inclined strictly towards islam. His mobile rung and the there was some quranic verse set as a tune on his mobile. At once another friend, who was in a disturbed state of mind, shouted "yar isey to band kar".And then after realizing his mistake on knowing the fact that the tune was of some quranic verse he immediately did astaghfar.

So the point is i am no aalim to declare that quranic verses should be there or not as ring tones in mobile phones. My opinion in this regard is that it should not be there because it needs a lot of care.for example the mobile should not be in the pocket of jeans.it should not be taken to washrooms etc etc.

If ones feel that she/he can take care of the sensitivities involved then she/he should go for it.

Again quranic verses stored in the mobile phone for listening during travel etc should be absolutely fine.

Still it will be unethical.lol

Another thing coming to my mind is that speaking is strictly not allowed during azaan.Similarly speaking is also not allowed during jumma khutba and majalis etc.QURAN is masoom and surely it has greater respect than azaan or juma khutba.so after this i dont think there is much space for your case.Rest is known better by ALLAH or some righteous and fair aalim should be consulted for this matter.

It is not a good thing that Quran is playing in background and you are busy in your own work. As courageneverdies mentioned Quranic verse:

7:204 When the Qur'an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy.

So as Allah says that we should listen Quran attentively. Beside this there are Ayats of Sajda in Quran. When we listen those Ayats then Sajda becomes Farz for us. Ab hm ma sy sb Hafiz-e-Quran tu nhi hy, hmain kis trah pata lgy ga k Sajday wali Ayat parhi ja rhi hy. Tu is ka gunah hmaray sir pr hi ho ga.

Second baat ye hy k Quran sun-nay sy ziada Quran parhnay ka ziada sawab hy. Agr hm daily kuch time nikaal kr Quran ko samjh kr parh lein tu is ka hmain boht faida ho ga. Aik Hadees ka mafhoom hy:

"Quran k hr Harf k badlay 10 naikyaan milti hein"

Jb hm Quran parhain gy tu usy parhnay ka sawab alag milay ga aur agr Allah ny Taufeeq di tu usy samajh kr ammal krnay ka be-hisaab sawab alag milay ga.

Is liay meray khayal mein hmein Quran sun-nay ki bajaey usay parhnay ki aadat apnani chahiay hy. Jo time hm Quran sun-nay k liay nikaltay hein, us sy b half time main agr hm wuzu kr k Quran thora parh lein tu hm boht faiday mein rhein gy.

When a man has this intense urge, he tries to get near Allah in whatever condition he is (as mentioned by you), so this 'cool dude' too, when having such strong desires, definitely will try to reach Allah and discover/rediscover the religion with a more serious attitude instead of just listening to the recitation of the Holy Quran in the background. I think when you have such feelings of guilt, you get all in all involved in an activity which you think is going to bring you some fruit, atleast at that instance and under that spell. So first of all, a person won't listen to Holy Quran in the background in order to get Hidyah(discover/rediscover religion) and secondly if he so desires sincerely then I think he would employ other meaningful means instead of passively listening to the Holy Quran.
