As far as I know, Field Marshal is higher rank than a general and it is awarded when a general leads or commands armies of more than one country in war.
Ayub Khan didn't led army of any other country in any war but he just delivered some lectures sort of training to Iran or Turkey's army. & after that he himself awarded himself this rank.

I am not sure but I heard somewhere a field marshal is a general who conquers a foreign land or a disputed territory. I might be wrong.

Field Marshal is the highest army rank, even above that of a General. It is a titular rank, means it has nothing to do with command line of an army, role of a Field Marshall becomes more prominent during a war as he is higher in rank than a General, he is given bigger commands like that of more than one army groups, or multinational armies. The office of a Field Marshall is un-retiring, means an officer may retire from his army service, but will still hold the office of Field Marshall. Those officers of the Genral rank who performed brilliantly in their army service, like successful leadership during a war etc, are promoted to this rank. There are a few exceptions to that as well, as members of the royal family are eligible to be appointed as Field Marshals, or King Brendra and King Mahendra of Nepal were designated Field Marshalls of the British Army, infact different armies have different criteria for appointing Field Marshalls. Usually a higher authority, like British Monarch, or German President promotes an officer to the office of the Field Marshall upon recommendations by the army, ironically Field Marshall Ayoub Khan appointed himself as the Field Marshall, you should be aware of the reasons (Ayoub Khan thought he had successfuly led the army in 1965 war, so he deserves to be Field Marshall).

Field marshal is the highest rank and is given to the one who is commanding armies, its unlike own army chief. A general who leads many armies is field marshal. . Ayub Khan is the only field marshal in Pakistan, not because he won 1965 war but because he was chosen head of all armies of RCD pact countries.

A Field Marshal is a General Officer who is, owing to his prestige and experience, elevated to the rank of Field Marshal to command more than one armies, of the same nation or multiple. More commonly an officer is elevated to the rank of Field Marshall during wartime when need arises for multiple armies or army groups, headed by Generals, to have a joint commander. Examples include Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery who commanded allied armies engaged in North Africa campaign during World War II, and his counterpart the revered Desert Fox, German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel who commanded German and Italian forces.

Apart from war, it is an honorary title and maybe, for example, awarded to a General who performed briliantly during a conflict or a small scale war.

Ayoub Khan never commanded multiple armies in field, so it could be said that he was a self proclaimed Field Marshall, since he awarded the office to himself.
