bound by common religion , yet we have grave ethnic clashes. as BALOCH vs Punjabi, Sindhi Punjabi, mohajir, siraiki pathan. the clashes are not so as only because of the differences of language, they are deep rooted in unequal distribution of wealth: economic issues take the form of ethnic based clashes. remove economic disparities, there will be no ethnic based clashes.ethnic homogeneity may be useful in state building, i do not deny its role, but once economic differences crept in, people sharing common language may slaughter each other as happened in France during French Revolution 1789. yet ethnic heterogeneity may promote cooperation if there is a just economic system in order , The US can be cited as an example where different ethnic groups are living together in perfect harmony. All the clashes stem from economic disparities; they may be given ethnic, religious or cultural color, is a matter of the the audience (people) how and what attracts their emotions, and passions most, and by what they are moved.

for example, minority Muslims in united India were economic downtrodden class, poorer than Hindus. Muslim leaders deliberately put Islam in danger so as to unite Muslims and create a necessary bulwark against Hindu majority rule. passions rose high among Muslims, an Independence movement launched that culminated in the creation of Pakistan.

then observe Bengali movement 1971 why they got separated. and see how the country today is plagued by different issues that are given ethnic color. in Pakistan nationalists no longer attract their respective people by common faith, but by ethnic background. they dont say tht we are all muslims but instaed say, we are sindhi, punjabi, pakhtoon, baloch, seraiki. and respective poor people belonging to a group pay heed to their leaders call; saying we need an independent state because we are not given our share of wealth. two brothers may fight over their share of inheritance. what i want to prove is that. all clashes are due property, wealth.

Well, the ethencity is the oldest division in human society but after the arrival of different religions, the role of ethencity becomes weaker. Still, in todays world the anthropologists divide the world population on the basis of ethencity as it provides the basic knowledge of human race.
Ethenicity plays important role in world as well as regional politics as people of same ethenic group likes to vote for their group and if seperated from the group physically, they consider themselves part of that group psychology.
In pakistan, the main ethenic groups are Punjabi, Sindhi, Baluchi, Pathan. Beside these, there are several other groups like UP (urdu speaking), makrani, Hazarawal, Kashmeri, Shina, Balti and many more smaller ones.
Although, the ethenic feelings are getting weaker day be day due to globalization, still some leaders use these feelings for their vested interest and get seats in assembly. The best example is Karachi, where several ethenic groups are in conflict for getting the bigger share of cake on the basis of their ethenicity. It is the same karachi, where all these groups were living peacefully in past but since the arrival of ethenic politics, the city is divided into ethenic zones.

If your topic subject is Pakistani politics then YES ethnic values is playing a major role in its politics but approaching your topic from international perspective and western world they are completelt devoid of such divisions in politics based on ethnic background. A recent example in wersten politics is of Syeeda Warsi who was appointed as Chairwomen of Tory Party, this is a perfect example that their political values are above any ethnic values while the contrary is not true in case of our home country. Karachi has become the hot battle ground for such ethnic groups overwhelming influence of each other.

I hope above elaboration would get you started on your topic.
