Some excellent suggestions up there and while there are too many to recommend, there's an upcoming Pakistani film called Mah-e-Mir that I'm eagerly awaiting. The trailer looks very promising and the script is written by Sarmad Sehbai (himself an excellent poet): http://tribune.com.pk/story/737914/u...moon-with-mir/

Although everything is jumbled up in mind still I'll throw a few random ones (even though 'all art is useless' :P)

(war)
Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Full Metal Jacket
The Killing Fields

(coming of age)
American Graffiti
Ferris Bueller's Day off - this one's total fun.
Summer of '42
Diner

(on the road)
Two-Lane Blacktop (most people hate it - at your own risk)
Easy Rider
Vanishing Point
Scarecrow (Pacino's underrated masterpiece)

(general)
After Hours (Scorsese's underrated masterpiece)
Amelie (nice little happy film)
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
The Fire Within
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Elephant Man
Blow-Up (there are two, this one's by Antonioni)
Love and Death (Woody Allen)
The Big Lebowski

Heck, I can't think straight. What a mess! Later, may be.

P.S. Do check out Bergman's The Seventh Seal and Winter Light, at your own risk. :P
