Default Forty Rules of love by Elif shafak.

This book called Forty Rules of love by Elif shafak is loved by many. It was so popular. So, I decided to read it and I was hoping to fall in love with it which did not happen. Except for the rules and certain parts of Shams' life I did not like anything else. Or may be I am unable to extract the message out of the main character's life the woman who leaves her children and husband behind to pursue a relation where she found "love". What is the profound message that I am unable to grasp?

No need to stress your mind, there is no profound message. It is an average read for a bibliophile and below average for a picky person.
Regarding popularity have a look at popular movies. There is nothing special usually, sometimes even worse than the the rest; same goes with the books most of the time.

Two parallel stories in different eras, 1244 AD and 2018 AD, tell their readers to follow their heart, shun parochialism and adopt the universal outlook. Inner purity, compassion, love, empathy, and modesty have more value than materialistic success and temporal relations. In addition, this book underscores the fact that change is constant: everyone, irrespective of their age and gender, can change themselves and follow the correct path.

This is the message of "FORTY RULES OF LOVE"
