The Possibility of New Provinces in Pakistan

Source: paradigmshift_pk

A short summary of the article:

The people of Sindh, NWFP (now KPK), and Baluchistan felt deprived of their identity when General Ayub Khan (the then President of the country) established a ‘‘One Unit’’ to reduce administrative costs and provincial prejudices. It was even seen by East Pakistanis as an attempt to counterbalance the numerical strength of Bengalis.

Pakistan, even today, faces many movements demanding separate provinces from ethnicities like Saraikis, Hazaras, Mohajirs, among others.

The constitution of Pakistan, unlike the constitution of India, does not allow for the creation of new provinces. Even the merger of FATA and KPK has only modified the boundaries of an existing province.

Need for new provinces is a serious matter now a days. On administrative basis ,new areas should be demarcated so that management becomes more smooth, because distance from centre is an obstacle for the provision of services to far flung areas, for example interior Sindh and south Punjab.

How propoganda, brother!! new provinces are needed on administrative basis. I think it is one of the most important issues now days. In recent CSS two to three questions came regarding this topic in various papers.

New provinces debate only stir up around elections for political expediency. They also have the potential to create a domino effect for even more ethnicity based provinces that can harm nationalism; if say the hazaras demand a prov in KPK or seraikis in Punjab. Ethnicism will trump nationalism. The better course of action would be to have empowered local governments at the tehsil level to solve basic issues.
