Published: October 30, 2011

Pakistan won the final of the Hong Kong Super Sixes tournament by beating England by 35 runs on Sunday, reported Express 24/7.

England won the toss and elected to bowl first. Pakistan made a challenging total of 155 runs in the allotted five overs.

Abdul Razzaq was the top scorer for Pakistan. Umar Akmal was the pick of the bowlers and took three wickets. While, Hammad Azam claimed two wickets.

Akmal was named the man of the series for his brilliant efforts with the bat and the ball.

Earlier in the first semi-final of the day, England had beaten Srilanka by seven runs.

Akmal and Sohail Tanveer – two more discarded players from the Test squad which faces Sri Lanka later this month – were among the seven-member squad. Ramiz Raja, Hammad Azam, Yasir Shah and Sharjeel Khan are the others.

Pakistan, who finished runners-up to Australia in the Super Sixes last year, were placed in Group C with South Africa, India and Hong Kong.

Australia, England, Bangladesh and Ireland comprise Group B while an All Star team, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Scotland form Group A.

The Hong Kong Sixes was first held in 1992 and is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. Pakistan won the inaugural event, then again in 1997, 2001 and 2002.

Spot-fixing controversy

Butt gets 2 years 6 months in jail, Asif gets 1 year, Amir six months

Richard Sydenham at Southwark Crown Court
November 3, 2011

Salman Butt, the former Pakistan captain, has been sentenced to two years and six months in jail for his role in the spot-fixing case; Mohammad Asif has got a one-year jail sentence and Mohammad Amir six months. Mazhar Majeed, the players' agent, has been sentenced to two years and eight months.

The sentences were handed down in Southwark Crown Court on Thursday morning, bringing the curtains down on one of sport's most sordid and shameful scandals. The sentences are open to appeal - though it is not yet clear whether any of the parties will do so - and can be reduced to half the term for good behaviour.

The incarceration will begin immediately, with the players - who had all come to court with bags - due to be led into prison straight from the courtroom. It seems, in Amir's case, that he will be sent to a young offenders' detention centre instead of jail.

In Lahore, the families of the convicted players were stunned by the sentences. Amir's father said the Pakistan government should have helped his son. His brother Saleem said: "He is a kid, he can't understand things. These six months are a lot for a boy who is immature."

Butt's father Zulfiqar was more aggressive, saying his son was innocent. "Our own friends conspired against us," he said. "You can check our bank balance, we haven't even been able to build our own house."

The judge began proceedings with his summation of the case of each of the four found guilty, reading out their sentences one at a time, and his initial words suggested jail terms for all four guilty.

"Now, when people look back at a surprising event in a game or a surprising result or ever in the future there are surprising results, followers of the game who have paid to watch cricket or who have watched cricket on TV will wonder whether there has been a fix or what they have watched was natural."

"It's clear you were the orchestrator of these matters," Justice Cooke told Butt. "You had to be to make sure these two bowlers were bowling at the time of the fix."

To Asif he said: "Whilst no money was found in your possession, it's clear that you conspired to bowl a no-ball. There's no evidence on your part of prior fixing but it's hard to see that this could have been an isolated incident."

There were frantic scenes in and around courtroom number four on Thursday morning at Southwark Crown Court, as media and members of the public crammed to witness the sentencing.

The guilty entered the court last after a crazy scrummage for seats by media workers and public. Even regular court reporters commented that they had not seen such desperation in court to be present for sentencing of a trial.

Butt and Asif were found guilty of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments by a jury on Tuesday, while Majeed and Amir pleaded guilty at a pre-trial in September. It all followed the now infamous three pre-determined no-balls that were delivered in the Lord's Test match last year, two by Amir and one by Asif, orchestrated by Butt and arranged by Majeed.

Pakistan win series after drawing third Test against Sri Lanka

SHARJAH:
Pakistan clinched the three-Test series against Sri Lanka 1-0 after the third and final cricket match ended in a draw at Sharjah stadium here on Monday.

Persistent rain wiped out play in the pre-lunch session — a two hours and 35 minutes delay — which left Sri Lanka with little time to enforce a win despite declaring their second innings at 181-6, setting Pakistan a target of 255 in a possible of 61 overs.

By tea, Sri Lanka had taken three early wickets and were pressing for a win. Pakistan lost a further fourth wicket when opener Taufiq Umar fell for 39, before they finished at 87-4 when umpires called off the match four overs earlier due to bad light.

Skipper Misbah-ul Haq (nine) and Asad Shafiq (seven) survived some anxious moments to salvage a draw.

Pakistan won the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets after the first in Abu Dhabi ended in a draw. The result kept Pakistan on the sixth ranking, as they needed a 2-0 victory to jump one place up and replace Sri Lanka on fifth.

Pakistan spinners seal clean sweep

Pakistan 177 (Umar 57, Misbah 47, Razzak 3-21, Mahmudullah 3-4) beat Bangladesh 119 (Mahmudullah 35, Hafeez 3-27, Ajmal 2-6) by 58 runs

Bangladesh had an opportunity to end a losing streak against Pakistan that has lasted 12 years, but Pakistan's slower bowlers were so far superior than their counterparts that the target of 178 seemed far out of reach for the hosts. The track was tailored to suit Bangladesh's strength - spin - but it backfired in final analysis as they didn't have the batsmen capable of sticking it out long enough to entertain thoughts of earning a consolation win.

Pakistan took the series 3-0, but not without some sweat. Their batsmen too were found wanting against Bangladesh's spinners, losing nine wickets to them and failing to bat out 50 overs. In the context of the struggles faced by the batsmen from both sides, the stand of 94 between Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal proved the difference. Bangladesh had a similar foundation going between Shahriar Nafees and Mahmudullah, but a floodlight failure disturbed the concentration of the well-set pair and brought a power-shift towards Pakistan's spinners. There was no looking back since for Pakistan as they took the last nine wickets for 50 runs.
