Education System in Ummayyads
Warriors and conquerors in ummayyad Government had less time and lesser inclination towards education , they regarded that for a person the education of his mother tongue is enough and if a person know more than it ,he becomes a Kamil (perfect) . so ummayyads gave little to education system . Inspite of it During the period of the rightly-guided caliphs extensive conquests were made east and west. The empires of Persia and Byzantium which the Muslims overthrew had sophisticated educational systems. The Muslims assimilated these systems according to their needs.During this period, Kufa, Basra, Damascus and Fustat developed intoeducational centers besides Mecca and Medina. Under the Umayyads the process of education expanded. Till now education focused on the Quran and the sayings of the Prophet. During this period, the syllabus was enlarged to include grammar, history, geography and law.Schools were attached to mosques, and these were largely attended. Eminent scholars set-up private institutions of their own,Hasan Basri had a school in Basra,Abdullah ibn Masud had a school in Kufa,Malik Ubaydah and Abu Darda had schools in Syria. Under the Umayyads, Damascus, Antioch, Beirut and Hims developed as educational centers there were many sources and education system its own which gave rise to further development to education and knowledge in the coming period . the following system and sources of education were in Ummayyad government. 1.The Ancient Schools 2. Muslim Theology 3.Medicine 4.Philosophy 5.Science History and Geography 1.The Ancient Schools these schools existed in several centres or cities among whcih are Kufa , Madinah , Basra and Damascus are most important .Madinah was centre of moderate pietists who have no intrest in politics . they were non alides and non umayyads , they devoted all their energies to get knowledge . A number of these students met in mosques and bacame intrested in spritual life and ascetisim . At the end of ummayyds they became expert and specilaized in these filed of intrest and give rise to these principles of law , doctrine , philosophy , theolgy in Later Abbaside period. 2. Muslim Theology Muslim theolgy started in umayyads period because early islam had no systematic theology .In this period Muslims began discussing and disputing over religious matter between different sections among them . this generation had not seen prophet and sahabis so the question arose how to interpret quran , this led to tafseer and muslim theology start . The period of ummayyds is a period of incubation and prepartion of Muslim theology. 3.Medicine In medical science has developed at the Caliph Al-Walid bin Abdul Malik. In the year 706 AD he founded the School of Medicine. Al-Walid ordered the doctors to conduct research activities with a sufficient budget. The doctor on duty was paid by the State instituted. He also forbade lepers to beg on the streets. In fact, it provides special funding for leprosy patients and the doctors were instructed to continue to conduct scientific research on medical science. For the development of medical science, the Umayyad caliph asked for help from the doctors at Jundisahur to assist the development of this medicine. After that many medical experts to be the personal physician of the caliph, whom Atsal, a Christian, and Al-Hakam Dimisyqi. 4.Philosophy Ummayyds did a little for philosophy but it was not ummayyds responsible it was whole all before ummayyds becuase Muslims do not recognize at first philosophizing activity of pre-or early Islamic era, especially in the Hijaz region the birthplace of Islam. Nevertheless, Muslims from the beginning was the potential to be interested in philosophy . Umayyds Gave a start and in flourished further a got a peak in Abbasides. Khalid Bin yazid I who was reputed founder of Arabian Alchemy or Medieval Chemistry , He was known as philosophers of the Ummayyds. beside this a few Christan , jewish and Magians doctors and physcian flourished in the courts of caliphs and governors. Muatzilah , Qadriya schools of philosophy are in their initial stage at umayyads .The birth of philosophy also helped strengthen the foundation of Islam in the course of development time, which offers a philosophy of ijtihad thinking patterns and influence in the development of Islamic teachings. Through the growth of science and philosophy of the philosophers of science to build the basics of civilization and established patterns of thinking according to the guidance of Islamic values. 5.Science History and Geography The science of history and geography have also grown at this time. One historian who has successfully written numerous historical events that occurred before and during the reign of the Umayyad period is Syaryah bin Ubaid Al Jurhumi. He was ordered by Mu'awiyah to record some of the science of history. Among his works are The Book of Proverbs and the Book of Al-Muluk wa al-Madhi Ahbar. Besides Ubaid, there are other historical writers such as Shuhara Abdy who lived during Mu'awiyah. He managed to write a book Kitab Al-Proverbs |
