The subject and verb of a sentence must concur with each other in number whether they are solitary or plural. On the off chance that the subject of the sentence is particular, its verb should likewise be solitary; and if the subject is plural, the verb should likewise be plural.
Example

Correct: An important part of my life has been the people who stood by me.
