Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi

Life:
Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi, also known as Hazrat Mujadad alf sani (the reformer of the second millennium), was the muslim saint, reformer, and mystic of the Naqshbandia order. He was born on june 15, 1564, at sirhind. He received his early education at Sialkot and sirhind. Sheikh ahmad memorized the holy quran at early age and studied Hadith, Tafseer (commentary) and Ma`qul (philosophy). He was mysticism by his father, sheikh Abdul ahad, who was prominent sufi scholar. Sheikh ahmed received spiritual training from Baqi billah. Baqi billah bestowed khilafat on him soon after his discipleship. Sheikh ahmed passed away on December 10, 1626.
Movement of Reform
Background:
When sheikh ahmed began his reform movement Muslim society was ridden with un-Islamic practice and trends. The mystics and sufis openly denied the authenticity of shariah by declaring it as external. The ulama ceased to refer to the Quran and Hadith by considering jurisprudence as the only religious knowledge. Moreover, Akbar Din-i-illahi was promulgated, this affected the Muslim society deeply and split it into factions, promoting heretic practices.
Effort of Sheikh Sirhindi:
Sheikh ahmad undertook the job of purifying the Muslim society of un-Islamic tendencies. He emphasized on Ittibat-e-Sunnah (examples of the holy prophet) and the commandements of shariah in the preaching. Sheikh ahmad restore the original teachings of Islam and emphasized on the concept of Tauheed. He declared that mysticism without shariah was misleading and denounced those ulamas who had questioned the authority of shariah. Sheikh ahmad stressed on the Muslims to revert to the purer Islam by giving up heretical practices. Moreover, he exposed the fallacy of Din-i-illahi by urging Muslims to live through Islamic principles. Sheikh ahmad was successful to a greater extent to extract the Muslims that they would never obey orders of repugnant to Islam.
Impacts of the Movement:
The efforts of sheikh ahmad sirhindi to purify the religious and practical life of the Muslims left impact on the history of Muslims of India. His movement for the cause of Islam gave a new life to the Muslims. He successfully prevailed upon Jehangir to alter his religious views and abandon his father`s religious policies. Jehangir ordered holy sermon (khutba) to be recited and cow slaughter to be carried out. Moreover, he got opportunity to denounce Akbar`s religious innovations.
