Clamping-down the media

World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated around the world but maybe not in Pakistan. The ambit for the media has been dwarfing at a petrifying celerity. About 157 media persons were targeted between May 2017 to April 2018. 35% of them from the Capital – the place which houses all agencies’ headquarters, PM house, President house and countless ministries. GEO TV has been censored without any plausible reason. The journalists and writers complain about being advised not to write on sensitive subjects. The repression, of course, is not unprecedented but the timing sure is. The country ostensibly is on its path towards an unparalleled feat in its democratic history, yet the press continues to be tyrannized by unconstitutional means. The independent press and media are a testament to a burgeoning democracy. The late clamp-down is undeniably a mockery of our supposed nascent democracy.
