I agree with you that democracy could not directly do anything about debts and deficits but it does have a lot of influence in the economic sphere. You have taken a very macroeconomic view but the impact of democracy has very real and tangible manifestations in our own daily lives at a micro-economic level.
Hence I would like to suggest some more economic evils that can be "cured" with a more widespread application of democratic principles; End of Fraud and Exploitation, Promotion of equitable and sustainable development, Reduces gaps between the classes(as more democracy=more opportunities for the lower classes to better themselves), Nurtures entrepreneurial inclination and promotes innovation etc etc
