Judging from all this hue and cry about essay scores, I have one word. Negative marking. You write a spotless shining essay. But every mistake (spelling, lack of connectivity, contrary to stance statement) bites a chunk out of your score. You are eventually left with 10,11 or so marks. There is no other explanation.
Solution: keep it simple, keep it tight. You automatically obliterate any room for error.
