Default Reforms Of Ala-Ud-Din Khiliji

Reforms Of Ala-Ud-Din Khiliji

Ala-ud-din took over the throne of India in 1296. In the beginning, he had to face many challenges. A few revolts occurred during the early period of his reign. Although, all these successfully subdued him to find out the root cause of these revolts. After consulting his nobles, he reached the following conclusions:

1. Inefficiency of the spy-system.

2. During parties among the nobles brought them close to one another and it provided the basic for conspiracies against the king.

3. Social intercourse and inter-marriage among nobles made them a complete dangerous for king.

4. Excess of wealth gave people power and leisure for evil thoughts and rebellions.

In order to deal with all above irregularities, Ala-ud-Din passed following ordinances:

1. All grants and pensions were revoked and all the lands held by people as gifts, pensions and endowments from the state were confiscated.

2. The spy-system was organized afresh. According to Lanepool, “This system was stricter than the Russian system”.

3. Sale and use of wine was prohibited and other intoxicating drugs were dealt with similarly at Delhi. In this respect, Ala-ud-Din set himself example. Severe punishments were imposed on breaching the orders.

4. He decided to impose a strict discipline upon himself.

5. He also began to supervise the working of the government personally.

6. Social meetings and intermarriage among the nobles were also banned except the consent of the Sultan.

Such measures of Sultan succeeded in fulfilling his objective. This made convivial parties lifeless and no revolt occurred during his reign until he became weak physically and mentally.

CAUSES OF MAKING REFORMS

1. To increase the income of the state and in order to maintain a large and well-acquired army and to put down designs of the Mongols.

2. According to U. N. Dey, one reason was to break the power of revenue collectors.
