Lawyer violence! come to an end learnt daily times editorial, friday, 31, july,2oo9
An FIR has been registered against five lawyers who publicly beat up an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police at the sessions courts in Lahore. Unfortunately, the whole episode was watched by the nation on TV. As the ASI was being thrashed, people simply stood around and watched, including other armed policemen on duty there. Such is the terror of the lawyers’ community since it embraced the habit of violence in 2007. This has to be stopped.
The reason for dusting the ASI’s jacket was simple, as reported in the press. The lawyers were defending an accused in a kidnapping case and had lost the case because of the ASI’s investigation. They asked the ASI to step into the barroom, and when he resisted, gave him the blows that the entire nation saw with its head bowed in shame. A police official has asked the Supreme Court to take suo moto notice of lawyer atrocities. But we think, more than that, the lawyers’ community should itself come forward and rebuke this behaviour by punishing the five ruffians.
There is really no need on the part of senior lawyers to defend everything other lawyers do. The phase of giving Chief Justice Chaudhry a leg-up is gone. Now it should be business as usual and the lawyers must go back to being normal law-abiding citizens. The latest incident is one in a series — a day earlier they had misbehaved with a civil judge in Lahore — proving that some lawyers have misunderstood the entire campaign for the independence of the judiciary and must be set right. One effective way would be to disbar the guilty ones. They can go and be whatever they want to become but not lawyers.
