This is called a beta-negative decay, in this type of decay a neutron is converted to a proton and this is accompanied by the emission of an electron and an antinutrino.

The reason for the increase in atomic number is the conversion of a neutron into a proton (as atomic number is the number of protons in an atomic nucleus)
