Dear brother,
Some sects prefer to have a Peer (A guide) but some are against this practice.
One common thing between both sides is "their rigidity" on their stand.
Andrew Dufresne has rightly guided you to the thread which il cover the basic concept regarding this topic.
I do respect your thrill to explore the topib but I can easily conceive that this topic would have to close in later stage if both sides could participate.
We don't have enough patience to listen opposite sect so if difference of opinion rises here; it would involve in great emotional debate.
Even both sides of the participants will give you solid arguments and we il get more confused.
Iqbal, a great scholar, has truly commented about this system by admitting the sensitivity of this issue:
یہ معاملے ہیں نازک جو تیری رضا ہو تو کر
کہ مجھے تو خوش نہ آیا یہ طریق خانقاہی
Regards
