It is a chatting/instant messaging service just like Yahoo or MSN. AIM stands for Aol Instant Messenger. It is one of the oldest instant messaging software and was widely used in late 1990s and 2000s. It had 52% market share in 2006 which has collapsed to 0.73% only in 2011.
