I think Richerd meant that every man is in need of a friend, a companion or any person who is a fallback for him in the times of difficulties....& religion provides him this oppertunity. Religion facilitates his way to his Creator & man finds an image on whom he can rely fully. So, God is there just to satisfy man's own need.
wel to me i dnt think so that this interpretation wud go to RB's statment.

2ndly may be the statment is meant to say that Man worships God to get his own benifits

this could be the reason..

Well, that's Richard Burton's opinion that may have some rationales behind it. I can't come up with any satisfactory conclusion until those rationales get unfolded. So kindly expand the course of discussion with some background
yea this is right that every buddy has his own thinking/perception.. RB stated this with his own calculated studies, if any background or certain statments or any example that could support his statement, be found, than discussion could be proceed intrestingly.
