Default Arab League incapable of fixing problems

Syria has declared that it has begun a systematic pull out of its military forces from urban areas to end the month's long crisis in the country.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Yahya al-Aridi, Professor at Damascus University, to share his opinion on this issue.

Following is the text of the interview:

Press TV: I want to ask you what do you know that the Syrian government has done so far to try and make this plan work now? If unsuccessful, what do you think might happen then?

Al-Aridi: Actually mistaken any person or any party who thinks that the Arab League would be capable of solving any problem because historically this has been council of regimes rather than representative of the Arab people. There was an initiative and to everybody surprise the Syrian regime has responded positively to that initiative that is at least verbally and the opposition actually said no, because we know that this regime is unreliable, we would not accept such initiative because of the continuity of what is happening on the ground.

Now the Arab League took note of what is happening and decided to meet on Saturday to just initiate or propose something new possibly to withdraw totally from interfering, relay the whole issue to the Security Council which is going to be a very tragic matter.

Press TV: So what you are saying is that on Saturday we are going to see some steps where the plans seems to have failed and that they might revaluate their steps by just keeping away and sending it to the UN Security Council? Is that what you are saying?

Al-Aridi: Well there are two possibilities. One thing is to dispatch specific observers to go into the streets of Syria and observe what is happening and who is initiating the trouble. Or they would say well, we proposed something and you didn't accept and we withdraw our hands from this and we'll relay it to the UN Security Council. In such a case the Security Council is the one that is going to take a sudden initiative towards Syria and Article 7 or something like that, which is really very tragic. Ultimately the Syrian people are the main losers of this whole thing.

Press TV: Do you think that all Arab League members are with the plan or do we have some kind of different perspectives when it comes specially to the people, to the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Qatar maybe?

Al-Aridi: Well, actually there is no consensus in the Arab League even in this committee which was formed to develop this initiative towards Syria. You would find a sort of controversial matters, lack of knowledge about what is really going on the ground and at the same time there are certain political strings attached with the interests and different relations between Arab countries and another and between these countries and Syria in general.

Now an issue related to wishful thinking and reality; wishful thinking probably on the part of certain people who are not that fond of Syria says that things are reiterating in a very tragic way. Well this is partially true, but there is reality out there. If we go back to the basic treatment of what has happened in Syria so far, the treatment was not quite as expected for the majority of Syrians. This forceful hand which was having the upper word, the upper hand on what is happening has led to terrible way of managing the whole matter even the president confessed that there was certain mistakes in the treatment of the issue.

Your guest from London said one very important point. I don't think that the United States is manipulating the issue there. No one would believe that the United States would not manipulate any event or any issue happening in the world. Look at that statement by the State Department spokesman, Mrs. Nolan. She said that do not believe this regime, do not turn in your stuff or whatever…

Now all these things are leading to more confusion of the whole matter. Nobody is being straight forward, truthful to come to the rescue of Syrian people even the regime itself. The regime is not fond of killing people but things developed in such a way to make things move minute after minute into something quite tragic. But this Arab league coming to the rescue of Syria will not lead anywhere actually. It would be used as a means to develop something terrible towards Syria and we'll be seeing this trouble thing in the coming few days.
