Yes,you can mention both fiction and non fiction.

My opinion:
you can mention those books as well which you have read ten years back.i don't see any problem in it if you can justify your interest.
it is not necessary that a book which inspired you,should be a newly published one.

Have you read "A message to Garcia"-an essay...By Elbert Hubbard.
It is one of the most published and acclaimed inspirational essay.

If you do not want to read lengthy books.I would suggest you to choose a simple book plus this essay.
It is awesome piece of writing.Enough to impress the panel.
