Default address my confusion regarding past perfect tense

According to a book " to the point" by Professor Aftab Ahmad.
Past perfect tense is mostly used in double sentences like
1.The Sun had set before we reached home.

but the confusing point he has made in the book that the above tense cannot be used in a single sentence without adverb/conjunction. In the absence of adverb/conjunction,the tense should be written in past indefinite tense.

1.we had done our task.(wrong )

as the sentence does not have any adverb/conjunction.So,according to him the sentence should be either in past indefinite tense or we must add adverb/conjunction to make it past perfect.
1.we did our task .
or
we had already done our task.
plz comment how all of you use this sentence in single sentences.
